Evonik presents the new matting powder SPHERILEX®EXP 0002-1
Win Innovation Launches New Matting Powder for Wood Coatings - SPHERILEX® EXP 0002-1. The product is a spherical silica bead with a small particle size, which is mainly suitable for use in architectural coating systems in addition to textured deep matte wood coatings.
In the design of wood decorative surfaces, the beauty of the natural texture of the material and the sustainable superposition are becoming a new design trend. The client wanted to splice floors, kitchen cabinets or furniture that not only had a smooth and beautiful surface, but also showed the fine grain of the wood without any glossy effect. In terms of sustainability, the customer wanted the coating to give the wood material more durable properties and the coating to resist mechanical stress.
Marc Trageser, Marketing Manager Decorative Coatings EMEA at Evonik's Coatings Additives business, says: "As customer trends show, wood coatings must do both. "It should provide the best protection for the surface while making it look natural and untreated."
EVONIK'S NEW MEMBER OF THE SHERILEX FAMILY IS TENTATIVELY NAMED EXP 0002-1. Its granular structure improves the scratch and abrasion resistance of the coating, helping to extend the durability of the coating. At the same time, silica provides a matte or silky glossy appearance to meet the aesthetic requirements of customers.
Trageser said: "The EXP 0002-1 combines Evonik's classic matting powder technology with excellent matting properties. As a result, no gray fog appears on the coated surface and the naturally beautiful structure is revealed." This is achieved by the particularly fine spherical particles of EXP 0002-1, which, by distributing mechanical forces, helps the coating of the applied wood surface to maintain a uniform, matte appearance while preventing scratches. Silica can be used in architectural coatings and waterborne wood coatings.
Another feature of the EXP 0002-1 is the flexible handling of the product. Pascal Schuster of Applied Research and Technology for Evonik's Coating Additives EMEA Area for Wood Coatings: "The product is easy to incorporate into formulations. Since silica has little effect on the viscosity of the formulation, it helps prevent undesired foam stabilization, even at high fill grades.
"Coating manufacturers can combine EXP 0002-1 with many other additives, fillers and film-forming binders, which greatly increases the range of applications for the new silica," Schuster said. ”
