Evonik Launches Asia’s First Alkoxide Plant in Jurong Island
Evonik has inaugurated its new state-of-the-art alkoxide production facility in Jurong Island, Singapore, marking a significant milestone in the company’s global catalyst strategy.
The multi-million-euro investment, first announced in May 2023, is designed to strengthen Evonik’s ability to meet the growing demand for alkoxides in Asia while advancing its commitment to sustainable, safe, and customer-focused operations.
The facility is engineered to meet the highest safety and environmental standards, achieving net-zero carbon emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2, aligning with Evonik’s broader sustainability goals. Its strategic location in Southeast Asia ensures rapid responsiveness and reliable supply to regional customers, supporting industries such as biodiesel, pharmaceuticals, and chemical recycling.
“This plant is more than an expansion; it represents our long-term commitment to Asia,” said Lauren Kjeldsen, Chief Operating Officer of Custom Solutions. “By producing closer to our customers, we enhance supply security and flexibility while contributing to Singapore’s vision for a sustainable chemical industry.”
The opening ceremony was attended by Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Ms. Grace Fu.
Minister Fu remarked, “Evonik broke ground in 2023, and in less than three years, this advanced alkoxide facility has been completed on schedule and within budget. We are pleased that partners like Evonik trust Singapore for their investments, expanding specialty chemical production to meet growing regional and global demand.”
The Singapore plant further completes Evonik’s global alkoxide production network, which also includes facilities in Germany, the United States, and Argentina. With this addition, Evonik now operates a global supply chain capable of responding quickly and precisely to local market needs.
Alkoxides are primarily used to produce sustainable biodiesel from vegetable oils, used cooking oils, and other fat-based residues. They optimize production processes to achieve maximum feedstock yield. Alkoxides also have wide-ranging applications in life sciences, particularly in the synthesis of active ingredients and fine chemicals.
