Evonik Converts Epoxy Hardener Production to 100% Renewable Electricity

ECHEMI 2025-08-08

Evonik has transitioned the power supply for its epoxy curing agents production to 100% renewable electricity across all key global sites, including Marl (Germany), Clayton (UK), Isehara (Japan), Los Angeles (USA), and Singapore. This move significantly advances the company’s sustainability strategy by reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions from these facilities by approximately one-third annually.

The shift supports Evonik’s broader climate goals of cutting these emissions by 25% by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Tobias Winkler, Global Sustainability Manager for Evonik’s Crosslinkers business line, noted that the global adoption of green energy in epoxy curing agents production is a critical milestone that not only lowers the carbon footprint but also aligns with the company’s long-term climate objectives.

This initiative builds on Evonik’s firm commitment to sustainable energy sourcing. Earlier this year, the Crosslinkers business began securing renewable electricity through green certificates and power purchase agreements, enabling all epoxy curing agent sites to operate fully on renewable energy.

Christina Walkosak, Senior Vice President of Epoxy Curing Agents, emphasized that the transition not only strengthens Evonik’s position as a trusted partner in the epoxy resins market but also responds to increasing customer demand for sustainable solutions. The use of green electricity across production sites enhances the environmental profile of its products, which are essential components in coatings, construction, high-performance composites, and adhesives.
