Colombian fake alcohol has killed 27 people Pay attention to these details when buying alcohol

As the year-end holiday approaches, the consumption of alcoholic beverages increases. Recently, there have been frequent deaths from fake alcohol in the Colombian province of Cundinamarca, which has now killed 27 people. Prosecutors said the level of counterfeit liquor imitation was high enough to "be fake."

Colombia's newspaper El Colombian reported on December 13 that 23 people died from drinking fake alcohol in Bogotá alone, and four in Soacha. Despite the actions that the health authorities have taken accordingly, since the beginning of the Christmas celebrations, there have been an average of 2 deaths a day in Cundinamarca due to fake alcohol.

According to the forensic report, the first recorded deaths from fake alcohol appeared on 24 November, and the victims were poisoned by drinking methanol, an industrial alcohol. José Manuel Martínez, prosecutor of the Bogotá Prosecutor's Office, said that the fake wine has been sent abroad for testing and it can be determined that the label of the fake wine is almost "fake and real", and that the alcoholic liquid also has a high similarity to the real thing.

Prosecutors said that the consumption of alcoholic beverages increased significantly in December each year, and some consumers did not have the financial means to buy real alcohol, and criminals used these points to sell fake alcohol.

At present, the capital city government has carried out 131 crackdowns on counterfeit alcohol and started to close 28 shops that do not comply with health regulations. Prosecutors have warned that selling counterfeit liquor could face up to 11 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the police reported that in the Bogotá and Medellín areas, since the beginning of the Christmas celebrations, a total of 1,700 bottles of counterfeit wine of different brands have been seized.

Jorge Iván Cohen, emergency medicine coordinator at Universidad CES, cautioned the public that when a hangover feels different from previous hangovers, it should be taken seriously. After drinking fake alcohol, symptoms such as strong headache and vomiting may occur.

To avoid buying fake wine, you should buy alcohol at authorized institutions, carefully check the seals, packaging and labels of the bottle, check for suspended particles in the liquid, and be vigilant against alcohol that is priced well below the market price.
