Unilever invests in microalgae ingredients
Unilever has established a partnership with biotechnology startup Algenuity to study the feasibility of microalgae as a food and beverage ingredient. The two companies will explore the potential of microalgae foods to market.
The research will focus on chlorella, a microalgae that contains a lot of protein and fiber and has little impact on the environment. According to the two companies, chlorella also contains several other beneficial nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids, but its high chlorophyll content (which gives the plant a green, bitter taste and smell) prevents its inclusion Mainstream diet. Algenuity claims to have developed a technology to overcome chlorophyll content limitations.
