Japanese squid imports increased 26% year-on-year in October

From SeafoodNews on December 13, as the catch of Japanese flying squid in Japan continues to decline, the Japanese government began to purchase overseas raw materials such as giant flying squid and Argentine squid (Illex argentinus).

Japan imported 9,399 tonnes of Argentine squid and large red squid in October, up 26 percent year-on-year, and an average price per kilogram of CIF rose 37 percent to 549 yen ($4.01), a trading firm said, adding the rise to the impact of soaring fuel prices, a weaker yen, and a recovery in global demand for food services.

From the perspective of the import market, Japan imported 4114 tons from China, an increase of 22%; Argentina's imports were 382 tons, up 46%; Chile's imports were 1,575 tons, an increase of 9.1 times. Peruvian squid production has been sluggish this year, and Japanese importers have turned to the steady catch of Chilean squid.

Japan's imports from Peru fell by 10%, Russia's by 30%, and the United States by 93%.
