Leakage Accident Turns Pristine Waters of Nago, Japan into Red: Propylene Glycol Safety Concerns Arise
According to Bloomberg on June 27, residents in the city of Nago, Okinawa, Japan woke up on Tuesday morning to discover that the typically clear blue sea had turned an unpleasant shade of red. It was revealed that a local brewery had experienced a leakage accident, resulting in the coolant used to regulate brewing equipment temperatures flowing into nearby rivers and contaminating the seawater.

Videos released by local media showed that the once pristine coastline of Nago, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and beach resorts, had been stained with a deep red color. The brewery has stated that this was caused by a leakage of propylene glycol, which is used in the cooling process.

The brewery has apologized for the inconvenience and concerns caused to nearby residents and relevant parties, and has pledged to take measures to prevent such incidents from happening again.
According to an official from the local health department quoted by the Okinawa Times, it is expected that the leakage will not have a "significant impact" on the environment. Propylene glycol is also used as a food additive and finds applications in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, and is generally considered safe.

In the United States, propylene glycol is deemed safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is widely accepted as a food additive. It can be used directly or indirectly in food products. However, in Europe, propylene glycol is only permitted for specific uses such as a colorant, emulsifier, antioxidant, and enzyme solvent, with strict limitations on its maximum allowable usage in the final product.
The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests a maximum daily intake of 11.4 milligrams of propylene glycol per pound of body weight (25 milligrams per kilogram). In the United States, it is estimated that the average daily intake of propylene glycol through food contact is around 15 milligrams per pound (34 milligrams per kilogram). These guidelines and regulations aim to ensure the safety of consumers and prevent any potential adverse effects from excessive propylene glycol consumption.
As investigations continue into the leak at the brewery in Nago, authorities are working to assess the extent of the contamination and ensure appropriate measures are taken to prevent any further harm to the environment and public health.
