Japan plans to strengthen the development of land-based aquaculture

News from SeafoodMedia on December 12 that land-based aquaculture is expected to grow due to its stable production as marine resources dwindle, and in order to provide comprehensive support, the government wants to determine the production scale of business operators and the types of seafood.

 
Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has decided to implement a government notification system for aquaculturers who produce fish and shellfish in land-based tanks starting in April next year.
 
In recent years, land-based aquaculture has entered the market, and Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries estimates that there are currently more than 300 enterprises mainly halibut, rainbow trout and tiger prawns. Unlike marine aquaculture, land-based aquaculture does not require the acquisition of fishing rights.
 
In the Fisheries Basic Plan, drawn up in March this year, the government set the goal of transforming aquaculture into a growth industry, aiming to increase the self-sufficiency rate of edible seafood from 57% in FY2020 to 94% in FY2032.
 
Land-based aquaculture still accounts for only a small fraction of fisheries production, and the Japanese government wants to expand it to increase self-sufficiency.
