What is the industrial preparation of nitrogen

The industrial preparation of nitrogen is a process to produce the gas nitric oxide (NO) by the reaction of air with a mixture of ammonia and water. Nitrogen is the most common atmospheric component, constituting roughly 78% of Earth's atmosphere, but it cannot exist by itself due to its unreactive nature. This preparation of nitrogen involves the following;

1. Ammonia

Ammonia as a nitrogen fertilizer is used to neutralize nitrates in soils. This ammonium ion produced upon consumption of ammonia by plants, along with the removal of nitrogen from the air, can then be used for the preparation of nitrogen. The preparation of this fertilizer, or as it is also known, hydrazine , has existed for many years. Hydrazine was first synthesized to be an alternative fuel source in aircraft and rockets. Hydrazine is also produced industrially through the reaction of water with sodium azide . This is the 1st step in industrial preparation of nitrogen.

The process of preparing sodium azide requires the use of a complex chemical process using a mixture of sodium metal, hydrogen and oxygen. The mixture of sodium, hydrogen and oxygen is then subjected to an electric arc to produce sodium azide. The primary component used in this preparation of nitrogen is ammonia, thus the industrial synthesis of ammonia also produced the industrial production of nitrogen. There are now many different methods for producing ammonium nitrate, but this method is still widely used in the industry today.

2. Preparing air with a mixture of ammonia and water

The preparation of nitrogen involves the reaction between ammonia and water to form ammonium hydroxide, or as it is also known, "white liquor". This mixture of water and ammonia is then subjected to an electric arc to produce nitrogen. The reaction between ammonia and water is often performed at high temperatures as well. This large temperature change is used to decompose the ammonia by reacting it with oxygen. In the industrial process, a large amount of heat is produced during this decomposition process in order for both the reaction and decomposition to take place quickly.

The industrial preparation of nitrogen requires large amounts of electricity that must be transported via overhead wires, thus not all cities have access to electricity sufficient for this process, which can be particularly limiting in rural areas with limited power access.

3. Nitrogen as a gas

Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-toxic diatomic gas that makes up nearly 78% of the Earth's atmosphere. The abundance of nitrogen on Earth is made possible by the absorption of atmospheric nitrogen into organic systems. These organic systems include decaying organic matter in soils and consequently, plants. Plants absorb atmospheric nitrogen in the form of nitrate ions located in sodium nitrate deposits to produce elemental nitrogen through combining these ions with oxygen.

Properties of nitrogen

1. Nitrogen is a dibasic element that exists in its pure elemental form as N2.

This pure elemental form of nitrogen is colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-toxic. Due to these properties, air and water are the two most commonly used mixtures with nitrogen in its elemental form. Nitrogen gas is often used as a means of food preservation due to its ability to displace oxygen within an enclosed area. A mixture of 70% nitrogen and 30% oxygen is often used for this purpose. Nitrogen gas has also been known to be used in the manufacture of explosives because it can easily be stored and transported.

2. Nitrogen is a non-flammable, nonreactive gas that does not support combustion when mixed with air at its normal concentration (78%).

Nitrogen gas is often referred to as an inert gas because it does not react with most other elements or compounds in the environment. This results in nitrogen gas being commonly used as a coolant and diluent within the chemical industry.

3. Nitrogen can be easily liquefied or compressed due to its low molecular weight.

Although nitrogen is colorless, odorless and non-toxic, it is often stored at low temperature as a means of preservation. Nitrogen can be easily compressed into a liquid state due to its very low molecular weight, which results in it having a very high boiling point of -195 degrees Celsius (-320 degrees Fahrenheit).

In conclusion, preparation of nitrogen has been a longstanding process that has been the basis of many industries within the chemical industry and agriculture industries. Nitrogen is one of the most common elements on Earth and occurs nearly everywhere, so consequently it is used regularly by people. The main purpose of nitrogen is to be used as an element in a chemical process and therefore industrial preparations will always exist because demand for it will always exist.
