What is industrial preparation of nitrogen from liquid air? The industrial use of nitrogen is mainly for the production of ammonia and nitric acid. Liquid air was originally employed for this purpose, but liquid air is now only used for research purposes as it has been superseded by liquid nitrogen. Nitrogen is a common by-product of the manufacture of nitric acid; it is also produced as a by-product in the preparation of sulphuric acid and phosphorus.

1. The air is liquefied by the process of refrigeration in which air is expanded through a turbine and its pressure reduced to 30-50 atmospheres.
2. The air is passed into an underground chamber lined with copper or iron, in which the air is purified of carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
3. From the underground chamber, water vapour and traces of other gases are removed by passing cold water over copper plates in another vessel. The nitrogen is purified by passing it over heated copper coils or iron plates in a charcoal-lined tank, where impurities are oxidized or absorbed and removed as gas from liquid air .
4. What is industrial preparation of nitrogen from liquid air? The purified liquid air is then condensed in a large heat exchanger that removes latent heat of condensation. It is then compressed to about 40 atmospheres, at which external pressures are applied to remove residual gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
5. The compressed vapour is desiccated by passing it through a bed of dry ice (carbon dioxide) or finely divided calcium chloride under pressure. It is finally concentrated by being passed over steam-heated columns and cooled to a temperature of -196℃ (water freezes at 0℃).
6. The cooled nitrogen is liquefied by direct compression to a pressure of about 10 atmospheres at which point it can be stored.
7. When required for an application, such as the production of ammonia, liquid nitrogen is passed over a heated bed of fuel particles such as iron oxide or activated carbon for minimal heat absorption and condensation.
8. The cooled liquid nitrogen is then passed over a heated catalyst containing ammonia and water in the presence of oxygen, rendering ammonia with the addition of heat and pressure.
9. The ammonia produced is stored in the vapor state until it is needed for a process or for consumption.
10. The nitrogen that is obtained by decomposition of the ammonia has to be purified of traces of ammonia and water by washing it over a cooled, steam-preheated surface and burning off the gases produced to obtain pure nitrogen.
Uses of Nitrogen from liquid air
1. The industrial preparation of nitrogen from liquid air can be done at multiple points in the chemical and petrochemical processes, such as Purification of natural gas and the production of ammonia, nitric acid and other chemicals.
2. The industrial nitrogen from liquid air is mainly used in the production of ammonia and nitric acid. Liquid air is employed for this purpose, but now only for research purposes due to its lower cost compared to liquid nitrogen.

6. Nitrogen from liquid air is used for the preparation of nitrogen fertilizers and synthetic rubber. The nitrogen is produced as a by-product in the production of nitric acid which is used as a raw material for nitric acid. It can also be used in the production of other chemicals, such as urea and ammonia by further reacting with oxygen.
7. Nitrogen from liquid air is also another source for organo-phosphorus compounds such as organic phosphates, organic phosphonates and formaldehyde. These compounds are mainly used in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, petrochemicals, explosives, fertiliser and pesticides production processes to manufacture different types of products such as drugs and pesticides etc.
