What is useful form of nitrogen and its use?
Useful form of nitrogen is a gas which is the most abundant element in the Earth's atmosphere and also makes up around 78% of the Earth's mass. It helps to keep plants green and life going on. Nitrogen is also a key constituent in animal and human metabolism, as it helps convert food into energy within our body by splitting it apart. Using nitrogen can help any plant when they are suffering from problems like nutrient deficiencies or environmental pollutants that may be lowering yields or making them unavailable to plants.

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for new and established plants. Although, nitrogen does not directly affect yields and crop quality, it is a vital nutrient for plant growth and performance. Small plants which are unable to process nitrogen efficiently will suffer as a result of low yields and quality.
Uses of useful form of nitrogen
Below are various uses of useful form of nitrogen:
1. Making nitrogenous fertilizers
The Nitrogen atom is a very important element for plants and thus is used in many fertilizers to improve the soil, quality and quantity of crops. Nitrogen can be absorbed from the air by plants which makes it an essential component which is found in various forms of nitrogenous fertilizers.
2. Processed fish and animal manures
Fish and animal manures are readily available residues of nitrogenous material which are made up of animal wastes that includes excreta, food processing waste and crop residues such as elephant grass and rice husks. The main components of these wastes are urea and uric acid. These forms of manure can be used to create a value added product by means of processing.
3. Animal feeds
Animal feeds are made up of wheat bran, molasses, urea and other forms of cattle fodder. These animal feeds have some sort of nutritional or mineral value that is important for improving the growth and development of animals.
4. Hydroponic
There is a growing demand for nitrates to be used in the hydroponic industry as they can be easily dissolved in water and thus can be used on a commercial scale. When using nitrogen in hydroponics, it is first converted into ammonia, which cannot be used directly by plants so it has to undergo further conversion which results in nitrate ion (NO3). This ion can then be stored and applied at a later time when required. The only problem with using the ammonia is that it has to be produced from gas or oil, but if these are not available, then urea can also be used for this conversion.
5. Top-dressing and fertigation
One important use of nitrogenous fertilisers is top dressing which means applying a layer of fertiliser on top of the soil. This is done as a preventive measure as a precautionary measure to provide plants with nutrients even before they are deficient. This technique is therefore used to prevent problems with plants instead of solving them after they have occurred. Top dressing can also be used with fertigation which is another form of application. Fertigation is the application of fertilisers by means of drip irrigation, which is preferred by many producers as it results in the even application of fertilisers.
6. Nitrification inhibitors
Nitrification inhibitors are used to reduce nitrification of ammonia which is an organic compound that contains nitrogen and hydrogen. It can be made into nitrates which are a form that plants can use because they remove the hydrogen and add oxygen instead. These compounds inhibit the conversion process which prevents them from becoming nitrate ions in water solutions. This then reduces the amount of nitrogen in its usable form, but still increases the amount overall, thus reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
Nitrogen gas is a naturally occurring element found all over. However, when there is a lack of this element in the soil and in the water, plants will suffer. Nitrogen is used as a plant food ingredient. These ingredients are needed because they increase the growth rate and both yield and quality of crops.
