Global Top 100 Chemical Industry: BASF regains the top spot
Recently, the British professional data analysis provider ICIS ranked the 2020 Top 100 Chemical Companies (Top 100 Chemical Companies) according to sales in 2019. The list is based on sales in 2019 and also provides annual operating profit, net profit, total assets, capital expenditure, R&D and employee data. The minimum entry threshold this year is US$2.493 billion. The total sales revenue of the top 100 global chemical companies in 2019 was US$1.05 trillion, a year-on-year decrease of 4.9%.
Five coating companies were selected this year, one more than last year. Among them, Sherwin-Williams ranked 15th with a sales revenue of US$17.901 billion, again ranking first in the global coatings industry. In addition, Sherwin-Williams’ net profit last year was US$1.541 billion, a year-on-year increase of 39.0%.
The US PPG Industry ranked 18th with a sales revenue of US$15.146 billion, but both sales revenue and net profit fell year-on-year, down 1.5% and 6.6%, respectively; AkzoNobel of the Netherlands ranked with a sales revenue of US$10.414 billion. Japan's Nippon Paint (Nippon Paint) made the list for the first time and ranked 51st with a sales revenue of US$6.367 billion. Sales revenue increased by 10.3% year-on-year, and its net profit fell by 9.5% year-on-year to US$301 million; RPM ) Ranked 67th with sales revenue of US$5.507 billion, and net profit increased by 13.8% year-on-year to US$305 million.
This year, Germany's BASF (BASF) regained the top position of the world's largest chemical company, with sales of 66.594 billion U.S. dollars in 2019, a decrease of 1.5% from 2018. In second place is Sinopec, headquartered in China, with chemical sales of 63.244 billion U.S. dollars in 2019, followed by Dow Chemical of the United States ranking third with 42.951 billion U.S. dollars in revenue.
In addition, DuPont, Evonik, Covestro, DSM, Arkema, Wanhua Chemical, Eastman Chemical, LANXESS, DIC, Huntsman, Wacker Chemical, Chemours and other chemical companies are all on the list. But the rankings of very few companies have changed. Among them, China-based Wanhua Chemical ranked 34th with a sales revenue of US$9.773 billion, and its net profit fell 34.9% year-on-year to US$1.455 billion.
"2019 is a difficult year for the global chemical industry. In the context of the slowdown in the manufacturing industry, sales and profits in almost all industries have declined." The simultaneous slowdown of the global manufacturing industry and the overcapacity in major chemical markets have made the situation in 2019 very difficult. According to reports, the top 100 companies in 2019 generated $1.05 trillion in revenue, a decrease of 4.9% compared to 2018. The data shows that 33 of the companies on the list saw sales drop by more than 10%. In contrast, the total sales of ICIS's top 100 chemical companies in 2018 was US$1.2 trillion, a year-on-year increase of 10%.
