US alumina imports up 1.12% in Q2, exports down 6.75%

In the second quarter of 2020, the United States imported 361,000 tons of alumina, compared with 357,000 tons in the first quarter, an increase of 1.12 percent, and 364,000 tons in the same period last year, down about 1 percent, according to the latest data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

In the first half of the year, the U.S. imported a total of 718,000 tons of alumina, down 27.25% from 987,000 tons in the same period last year.

In the second quarter, Brazil remained the largest source of alumina imports to the United States, exporting a total of 197,000 tons of alumina to the United States. In the first quarter, Brazil exported 233,000 tons to the U.S., down 15.45% from the same period last year, while exports were 234,000 tons, down 15.81% from the same period last year.

In the first half of the year, Brazil exported a total of 430,000 tonnes of alumina to the US, down 18.87% from 530,000 tonnes in the same period last year.

In the second quarter, Jamaica was the second largest source of alumina imports to the United States, with a cumulative total of 71,000 tons of alumina exported to the United States. In the first quarter, Jamaica exported 33,800 tonnes to the United States.

In the first half of the year, Jamaica exported a total of 105,000 tonnes of alumina to the United States, compared to 116,000 tonnes in the same period last year, a decline of 9.48 per cent.

In the second quarter, the United States exported 35,900 tonnes of alumina, down 6.75 per cent from 38,500 tonnes in the first quarter, and down 12 per cent from 40,800 tonnes in the same period last year.
