Korea recognizes ginseng for bone health

2020-09-28

The Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recently released a statement saying that ginseng was previously recognized for its ability to help improve immune system health and relieve fatigue. Currently, ginseng can claim 3 health claims in Korea: improving immune health, relieving fatigue, and improving bone health.

As a functional ingredient for improving bone health, ginseng extract contains 25 mg of ginsenoside Rg1 and Rb1 complex. The claim was released after research was presented on ginseng's ability to improve bone health. The 12-week study, led by the Korea Rural Development Agency (RDA), will continue to investigate new functions of ginseng while supporting its use on an industrial scale.

Ginseng, which has a relatively low value compared to red ginseng, would greatly boost ginseng consumption if it were developed into a variety of functional health foods. This is in line with Korea's overall strategy to promote the export of domestically produced functional health foods, of which ginseng is one.
