Solvay launches low-carbon engineering plastic raw materials

ECHEMI 2023-02-20

On February 15th, Solvay announced that the production system of hydroquinone and p-hydroxyanisole (PMP) adopted by the company's French Saint-Fond factory has passed the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS system certification, and relevant management The system will follow the system's mass balance accounting system. Subsequently, the company will produce low carbon emissions hydroquinone and PMP.

Hydroquinone and PMP are commonly used as substrates for polyetheretherketone, liquid crystal polymers, and other high-performance engineering thermoplastics. Both products can also be used as raw materials for epoxy and polyester coatings, polyurethane adhesives and as stabilization inhibitors during monomer production, storage and transportation. Other fields of industrial application involve the synthesis of rubber chemicals, pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Jo Grosemans, Director of Business Development at Solvay Naturals, said: "As a leading producer of hydroquinone and PMP, Solvay's mass balance certified products fully demonstrate its strategic commitment. The industry is transforming from a linear economy to a circular economy, and Solvay will be committed to comprehensively promoting the transformation of product solutions to high-quality and sustainable directions."

Grosemans said the certified range of hydroquinone and PMP produced from renewable feedstocks offers customers a drop-in replacement solution that is readily available and easy to implement. Such product solutions can replace fossil-based synthetic products currently available in the market without the need for time-consuming certification, sampling processes or changes to existing production and warehousing processes. Solvay adopts the principle of "responsible procurement" and replaces virgin fossil resources with renewable raw materials certified by mass balance, which is fully in line with the "Solvay One Planet" plan.
