Solvay’s Zhenjiang Plant Expansion Goes Online, Doubling Electronic-Grade Hydrogen Peroxide Output to Support Semiconductor Advancements

ECHEMI 2025-09-23

Recently, Solvay Group’s electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) expansion project at its Zhenjiang plant officially went online, doubling the facility’s annual production capacity. This move highlights Solvay’s long-term commitment to the semiconductor industry. Electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide is an essential ultra-pure chemical used in integrated circuit manufacturing, widely applied in critical processes such as chip cleaning and etching.

Electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide requires extremely high purity, with impurities controlled at the parts-per-trillion level, and only a few companies worldwide possess the technology to consistently produce it at scale. Solvay first commissioned its electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide production line at the Zhenjiang plant in 2018. With the completion of the White Swan Phase II expansion, the company is better positioned to meet the rapidly growing industry demand. As electronic devices continue to evolve, the number of transistors on chips roughly doubles every two years, driving increasing demand for ultra-pure chemicals.

Carlos Silveira, President of Solvay’s Peroxides Global Business Unit, said: “This expansion significantly enhances our production capacity and demonstrates Solvay’s commitment and responsiveness to customers in the fast-growing electronics industry. Leveraging Zhenjiang’s favorable business environment and professional support, we will further strengthen our competitiveness in the global electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide market. Our INTEROX Pico products offer industry-leading purity and consistency, supported by a unified production process across our global sites, ensuring reliable and consistent solutions for semiconductor customers.”

On September 15, 2025, leaders from the Zhenjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone, along with Solvay CEO Philippe Kehren, attended the expansion project completion ceremony. This expansion, combined with Solvay’s other investments in China, the U.S., and Europe, further consolidates the company’s leading position in the electronic chemicals sector, serving critical applications in semiconductors, flat-panel displays, photovoltaics, and MEMS/LED manufacturing.

Currently, Chinese domestic companies are gradually expanding their production of electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide. Hunan Shuangyang High-Tech currently operates approximately 40,000 tons per year of high-purity hydrogen peroxide, covering industrial, food, and electronic-grade products, with stable operations. In addition, Evonik and Fuhua Tongda are collaborating on a 200,000-ton-per-year hydrogen peroxide facility in Leshan, Sichuan, scheduled for commissioning in 2026. The project will focus on specialty and electronic-grade applications through further processing and purification, adding new capacity to China’s high-purity hydrogen peroxide market. Meanwhile, companies such as Zhengzhou Juson Technology and Dongying Nair Technology have initial production capabilities and are steadily building their R&D and manufacturing competencies. The Chinese electronic-grade hydrogen peroxide industry is in a growth phase, with companies continuously improving technology and production capacity, and is expected to meet broader demands in semiconductors and high-end electronic applications in the future.
