Solvay and Hankook Tire Collaborate on Circular Silica for Tires
Solvay and Hankook announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the development of bio-sourced and waste-derived recycled silica for use in tire production. The collaboration combines Solvay’s silica expertise and sustainability commitment with Hankook’s manufacturing capabilities and market leadership.
Solvay’s silica portfolio is recognized for ensuring low rolling resistance, which helps reduce fuel consumption in thermal engines and extend battery range in electric vehicles, while also providing high wear resistance, which extends tire life. In addition, Highly Dispersible Silica (HDS) is essential to achieving tire manufacturers’ circularity goals.
“This collaboration marks an important milestone on our journey toward more sustainable tire manufacturing. By working with Solvay, we can advance the development of sustainable materials to improve tire performance while contributing to the circular economy and a greener future,” said Bonhee Ku, President and CTO of Hankook Tire.
An Nuyttens, President of Solvay’s Silica and Specialty Chemicals business, added: “Silica is essential for high-performance tires. We are pleased to collaborate with Hankook on the development of circular silica solutions that address key industry challenges while delivering superior performance and environmental benefits. Together, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainable innovation.”
The two companies will jointly advance the technology development of circular silica with the goal of achieving mass production soon. Solvay’s products are currently in the pilot phase and are being evaluated. The collaboration is in line with both companies’ commitment to sustainability and their shared goal of a greener automotive future.
