Toray increases PPS production in South Korea
Recently, Toray Industries Co., Ltd. announced that it will add polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin production facilities at the Gunsan Plant in North Jeolla Province owned by its Korean subsidiary Toray Advanced Materials. After the completion of the project, the Gunsan plant will increase the production capacity of PPS resin "Torelina" by 5,000 tons per year, and it is planned to be completed and put into operation in December 2024. In addition, the company will also add a sodium hydrosulfide plant, which is the main raw material for PPS resins, thereby consolidating its position as an integrated production base from main raw materials to resins.
According to Toray, after the project is put into operation, together with the Tokai factory in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, Toray's total production capacity of "Torelina" will be expanded to 32,600 tons per year, ranking the largest in the industry. In addition to supplying the Korean market, the PPS resin produced at the Gunsan plant will also be supplied to Toray Group's bases in China, Europe, America, and Southeast Asia.
PPS resin is a super engineering plastic with excellent heat resistance and chemical resistance. At present, the demand for PPS resin in the application fields of electrical components of electric vehicles, electrical and electronic equipment, etc. is constantly expanding, and it is expected that the average annual growth rate of global demand will reach more than 6%. Accordingly, Toray decided to expand production capacity to meet market demand.
