Toray Supplies Reverse Osmosis Membranes to Saudi Arabian Desalination Plant

Toray Industries, Inc. announced that it has supplied reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to the Shuaibah 3 IWP desalination plant in Saudi Arabia through its Dammam-based subsidiary Toray Membrane Middle East.

The plant has a capacity to produce 600,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day, providing a stable supply of drinking water to areas such as Makkah, Jeddah, Taif and Baha. As population and inbound tourism grow, the demand for drinking water in these areas is also increasing.

The Shuaibah 3 IWP project transforms a conventional desalination facility into an environmentally friendly desalination facility using advanced reverse osmosis membrane technology. The facility consumes a lot of energy and produces a large amount of carbon dioxide through regular evaporation. A solar power generation system provides the plant with electricity equivalent to 65 MW peak.

The project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 45 million tons per year and reduce crude oil consumption by approximately 22 million barrels, making an important contribution to the sustainable development and decarbonization goals of Saudi Arabia's "Vision 2030" plan.

Toray develops and manufactures everything from reverse osmosis membranes and ultrafiltration membranes to membrane bioreactor modules.
