Baling Petrochemical launched a biomass blending test to help green production

ECHEMI 2023-03-09

The Coal Chemical Industry Department of Baling Petrochemical Co., Ltd. completed the second phase of the industrial test of the project "Research on Coal Gasification Technology of Biomass Mixed Raw Materials" and achieved the expected results. It is the first trial for the coal chemical industry to reduce carbon emissions and help green production.

The coal gasification unit of the Coal Chemical Department of Baling Petrochemical Co., Ltd. adopts Shell pulverized coal gasification technology and uses coal as raw material to produce crude gas. The annual coal consumption is about 700,000 tons, which is the company's largest source of carbon dioxide emissions.

In order to promote the realization of the goal of "double carbon" (carbon peak and carbon neutrality), with the attention and support of Sinopec headquarters, Baling Petrochemical relies on coal gasification equipment and uses the proprietary technology of multi-component coal blending without changing the process route or Change the operation method and do not carry out technical transformation on the device. It is the first attempt in the same industry to use renewable resource biomass particles to partially replace raw coal to conduct research on coal gasification technology. In May 2022, the first industrial test of biomass and coal co-gasification was carried out, and obtained better effect.

The coal gasification research team of the company earnestly summed up the first-stage test experience and carefully prepared. In February this year, the second-stage test was organized to carry out the mixed combustion test of different proportions of biomass particles step by step from the breadth and depth.

Biomass and coal are very different in chemical and physical properties. Baling Petrochemical’s coal gasification unit has no experience for reference in the co-gasification technology test of biomass and coal. In order to deal with the risks and challenges in the test process, Sinopec Chemical The business department, Baling Petrochemical and Ningbo Engineering Co., Ltd. cooperated closely to tackle key problems, and did a lot of preparatory work in the study of the properties of biomass raw materials, determination of trial combustion plans, risk analysis and response.

During the trial combustion process of the coal gasification unit of the Coal Chemical Department of Baling Petrochemical Co., Ltd., technicians were strengthened to monitor and collect data, increase staff training, and arrange the test progress in an orderly manner to ensure that the risk of the test process was controlled and the second phase of the test target was successfully completed. , verified the feasibility of co-gasification of biomass and coal, and provided a basis for the comprehensive blending of biomass in the future.

According to coal gasification professionals from Baling Petrochemical Co., Ltd., biomass pellets are a kind of renewable fuel, and the carbon dioxide produced by its combustion is not included in the total carbon emissions. The utilization of biomass is one of the important means to achieve the "double carbon" goal. If the biomass and coal co-gasification technology is applied in the coal chemical industry, it can effectively reduce production costs and reduce carbon emissions.
