What are the isomers of pentane?
Isomers of pentane refer to the isomerization of pentane over isomerization catalysts. As an organic compound, pentane’s chemical formula is C₅H₁₂. Pentane is commonly used to manufacture solvents, anesthetics, pentanol, isopentane, etc.
Isomerization refers to the process of changing the structure of a compound while maintaining its molecular weight. Generally, it refers to the change in the position of atoms or groups in organic compound molecules without any change in their composition or molecular weight. It is often carried out in the presence of a catalyst.
Types of Isomers of Pentane and the Boiling Point’s Difference
1. N-Pentane: Chemical formula C₅H₁₂, fifth member in alkanes. All carbon atoms are arranged in a chain. (Boiling point 36℃)
2. Isopentane: Also called 2-methylbutane, four carbons are arranged in a row, and the second carbon from left or right is methylated. (Boiling point 28℃)
3. Neopentane: It's called 2,2-dimethylpropane, with one carbon in the middle and one methyl around. (Boiling point 10℃)
Polarity Analysis of Pentane Isomers
The polarity of molecules has a significant impact on the solubility of substances. Polar molecules are easily soluble in polar solvents, while non-polar molecules are easily soluble in non-polar solvents, which is also known as "homogeneous mutual solubility".
The molecule’s positive charge center and the negative charge center misalign. From the perspective of the whole molecule, the charge distribution is uneven and asymmetric. Such molecules are polar molecules. Diatomic molecules bound by polar bonds must be polar molecules.
Then, is pentane a polar molecule? No, as this article described, pentane has isomers and different polarities can cause property changes. For example, the boiling points of Neopentane, Isopentane and Pentane increase in sequence, which is caused by the uneven arrangement of atoms in space and the increasing polarity.
Pentane and Neopentane are highly symmetrical in space and must be non-polar molecules. Molecular formula: C₅H₁₂ Molecular structure: C atoms bond with sp3 hybrid orbital, and the molecules are non-polar molecules.
Isopentane should belong to polar molecules, because the force on center C is unbalanced, and the four atoms or clusters are CH₃, CH₃, C₂H₅ and H.
The reaction type of isomerization
There are mainly two methods: the gas phase method and the liquid phase method. According to the most representative raw materials in the industry, they are further divided into 5 types: Isomerization of Alkanes, Isomerization of Olefins, Isomerization of aromatic hydrocarbons, Isomerization of Cycloalkane and Isomerization of cresol.
Catalysts - Key to Isomerization
There are mainly four kinds of catalysts used in the reaction of isomerization.
1. Fred Crawford catalysts are commonly used, such as aluminum trichloride hydrogen chloride, boron fluoride hydrogen fluoride, etc. Such catalysts have high activity and low reaction temperature and are used for liquid-phase isomerization, such as n-butane isomerization to Isobutane, xylene isomerization, etc.
2. Precious metal catalysts supported by solid acids, such as platinum alumina, platinum molecular sieve, palladium alumina, etc. This type of catalyst belongs to the category of bifunctional catalysts, where metal components play a role in hydrogenation and dehydrogenation, and solid acids play a role in isomerization.
When using this type of catalyst, the reaction needs to be carried out in the presence of hydrogen, so it is also known as a hydro isomerization catalyst for gas-phase isomerization. Isomerization of alkanes, olefins, aromatics and Cycloalkane can also be used. In particular, such catalysts are only effective for isomerization of ethyl benzene to xylene and Cycloalkane. Its advantages are less coking and long service life.
1.Non-precious metal catalysts supported on solid acids, such as nickel molecular sieves, generally also require the presence of hydrogen for gas-phase isomerization, but cannot isomerize ethyl benzene to xylene.
2. ZSM-5 molecular sieve catalyst, mainly used for gas or liquid phase isomerization of xylene.
