Toray's chemical recycling PBT resin products using depolymerization and repolymerization technology

ECHEMI 2023-11-10

Toray has been committed to the chemical recycling of depolymerized and repolymerized PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) resin generated during the production process for many years. It has previously expanded its glass fiber reinforced low warpage products, hydrolysis resistance and other high-functional grade product lineup, and began to provide samples.

This recycled PBT resin has the same level of physical properties as PBT resin derived from virgin materials and is expected to reduce the carbon footprint. In addition, they have obtained third-party verification based on ISO14021:2016 (※1) from SGS Japan Inc.

General resin recycling has problems such as the mixing of foreign matter or foreign materials and the deterioration of material quality. Toray's chemical recycling can achieve the same high quality as virgin materials by implementing one-stop quality management from depolymerization and repolymerization to composite modification.

Toray is currently developing levels of chemical recycling and material recycling using "post-consumer recycled plastic" (PCR) resin, which is recycled from post-consumer products recovered from the market.

In the future, Toray will fully promote the recycled PBT resin products of environmentally friendly resin materials under the brand "'Ecouse' TORAYCONTM".

Toray has set "responsible resource management and realization of a sustainable world" as one of its goals in 2050 in the "Toray Group Sustainability Vision". In the future, they will continue to strive to meet customers' needs for environmentally friendly resins and put into practice their corporate philosophy of "we contribute to society by creating new value."
