Harnessing Prebiotic Chicory Root Fiber for Mood Enhancement: Groundbreaking Study
Researchers at the Beneo Institute have unveiled a groundbreaking study highlighting the potential of prebiotic chicory root fiber, specifically oligofructose (OF), in significantly elevating Bifidobacteria in the gut. This elevation is identified as a crucial factor in influencing mental health positively. With a rising global awareness of the gut-brain connection, where two-thirds of consumers acknowledge the impact of gut health on mood, the study delves into the role of functional foods, such as prebiotics, in shaping this relationship.
The intricate connection between anxiety, depression, and the gut-brain axis remains a subject of ongoing research. However, the recognition that microbiota modulation can influence key mood parameters has sparked interest. Considering that diet profoundly shapes gut microbiota composition, interventions through functional foods like prebiotics present an appealing avenue. Given the staggering annual costs of mental health disorders, exceeding $1 trillion, the prospect of leveraging a dietary approach to positively impact microbiota is compelling.
To explore this cause-and-effect dynamic, scientists from the Beneo Institute and the University of Reading conducted a pioneering human intervention study. Focusing on prebiotic dietary fiber oligofructose (OF) and the human milk oligosaccharide 2'fucosyllactose (2'FL), the five-week study aimed to understand their impact on gut colonization and their potential to alleviate anxiety and depression.
The study, involving 92 healthy adults with mild to moderate anxiety and depression, employed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Subjects were divided into four groups, receiving daily doses of a placebo, OF, and 2'FL individually or in combination.
The results showcased significant increases in beneficial gut bacteria, including Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Roseburia, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, among those taking OF alone or in combination with 2'FL, compared to the control group. Moreover, participants in these groups outperformed the control group in improving severe mood state parameters, such as depression, anxiety, and positive and negative feelings.
Dr. Stephen Theis, Head of Nutrition Science for Beneo, remarked on the study's contribution to the evolving field of gut-brain-axis science. He emphasized the growing body of evidence linking gut microbiota composition and metabolites to mood states. The findings suggest that targeted influence through prebiotics, particularly oligofructose, could offer a viable approach to enhance mood.
Beneo's Orafti Oligofructose, derived from chicory root, stands out as a natural, non-GMO, and clean label prebiotic. The gentle hot water extraction method used to obtain chicory root fibers distinguishes them from synthetic counterparts. Their versatile technical properties make chicory root fibers suitable for various food and beverage applications, including baked goods, snacks, and even baby food, adhering to national regulations.
As proven plant-based prebiotics, inulin and oligofructose play a pivotal role in supporting a healthy gut microbiota. They selectively promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms, serving as preferred food for these organisms, thereby aiding in their multiplication and growth.
