Chuza Triumphs: Mexican-Inspired Snack Startup Claims Top Prize in PepsiCo's Juntos Crecemos Incubator

Bakery & Snacks 2023-11-15

Chuza has emerged as the victor in the inaugural PepsiCo Greenhouse Accelerator, specifically the Juntos Crecemos edition, aimed at uplifting emerging Hispanic businesses. With a shared entrepreneurial ethos focused on crafting treats that embody flavor, functionality, health, convenience, and sustainability, Chuza's distinct commitment to elevating the snack sector set it apart during the mentorship program.

Hailing from San Diego, this startup joined nine other finalists in the eighth annual Greenhouse Accelerator, marking the first-ever Juntos Crecemos edition. The intensive six-month program involved mentorship from PepsiCo executives, complemented by a rigorous judging process. Each finalist received a $20,000 grant and personalized coaching from PepsiCo's R&D, supply chain, and design experts, addressing their unique business challenges.

Antonio Escalona, Senior CVP and General Manager of the Hispanic Business Unit at PepsiCo Foods North America, commended all finalists for their substantial progress in areas like brand development, product optimization, technology scaling, business model refinement, and go-to-market strategy. However, Chuza's entrepreneurial mindset and unwavering commitment throughout the process secured its victory, earning the startup a $100,000 grand prize and additional resources for scaling operations.

Chuza, founded by CEO Daniel Schwarz, aims to redefine the snacks landscape with a lineup of spicy fruit and vegetable treats infused with 100% Mexican spices, devoid of artificial flavors or colors. The startup impressed the judging committee with its robust collaboration with PepsiCo, including the recent expansion of distribution to over 500 retail locations.

Schwarz expressed his honor at being selected as the winner and credited the substantial expansion and efficiency of his business to the invaluable guidance and support from PepsiCo mentors. With consumers craving authenticity and diverse snack flavors, Chuza plans to utilize the $100,000 grant to enhance brand and marketing development, raising awareness and continuing to share Mexico's flavors, culture, and flair with the world.

The winner's announcement took place at a ceremony at PepsiCo headquarters in New York, celebrating the journey of all 10 finalists and acknowledging the business improvements achieved with the assistance of PepsiCo mentors. Esperanza Teasdale, VP and General Manager of the Hispanic Business Unit at PepsiCo Beverages North America, congratulated Chuza and all participants for showcasing true leadership in advancing the future of the food and beverage industry.

Since its North American expansion in 2018, the PepsiCo Greenhouse Accelerator has evolved to support innovators in addressing consumer needs, maintaining its core objective of fostering entrepreneurial growth. Through collaboration with Juntos Crecemos, a platform providing critical resources to Hispanic-owned small businesses, the Accelerator extends its support to a diverse entrepreneurial segment, aligning with PepsiCo's pep+ principle that prioritizes sustainability and human capital at the core of its value proposition.
