The Growing Market Potential of GLP-1 Drugs in China's Obesity and Diabetes Landscape

ECHEMI 2023-11-21

China has emerged as the country with the highest number of obese individuals worldwide. With over 50% of adults and significant percentages of children and adolescents being overweight or obese, the demand for safe and effective weight control and diabetes management solutions is on the rise. This article explores the market potential of GLP-1 drugs in addressing the growing challenges of obesity and diabetes in China.

Obesity Epidemic in China:
According to the "Report on the Nutrition and Chronic Disease Status of Chinese Residents (2020)," China has an estimated 600 million overweight and obese individuals, making it the country with the highest obesity prevalence globally. Traditional weight loss medications have limitations in terms of safety and efficacy, creating a significant unmet clinical need for safe and effective treatments.

Diabetes Market in China:
China also faces a significant diabetes burden, with the highest number of diabetic patients globally. The number of adult diabetes patients in China reached 141 million in 2021, accounting for 26.2% of the global diabetic population. The market for diabetes drugs in China has been rapidly expanding, with projections indicating a market size of 1,675 billion yuan by 2030. The increasing adoption of diabetes medications through healthcare reforms and innovations presents substantial business opportunities in the country.

GLP-1 Drugs: Rising Stars in Diabetes Treatment:
GLP-1 drugs, represented by GLP-1 receptor agonists, have shown promising therapeutic effects, safety profiles, and multiple benefits in diabetes management. In the global diabetes drug market, GLP-1 drugs accounted for 18% of sales in 2022, surpassing 13.1 billion USD. With 96% of diabetes cases in China being type 2 diabetes, the use of GLP-1 drugs for type 2 diabetes treatment is experiencing rapid growth and has the potential to surpass insulin therapies.

Market Prospects for GLP-1 Drugs in China:
Given the significant markets for diabetes and obesity, the prospects for GLP-1 drugs in China are substantial. By 2030, the market space for GLP-1 drugs in diabetes treatment and weight control in China is estimated to exceed 20 billion yuan each. Currently, there are 12 GLP-1 drugs available globally, with 10 already approved for the Chinese market. Novo Nordisk's semaglutide (sold as Ozempic®) and Eli Lilly's dulaglutide (sold as Trulicity®) dominate the market share in China, both approved for diabetes indications.

Performance of Key Players in China:
According to the Q3 financial reports, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly continue to experience high growth in their global GLP-1 portfolios, with strong sales performance in China. Novo Nordisk's semaglutide achieved revenues of approximately 4.003 billion yuan in the first three quarters of 2023 (+160%). Eli Lilly's dulaglutide and exenatide achieved a combined global sales revenue of 8.42 billion USD in the same period, accounting for 34% of total revenue. Eli Lilly has submitted a registration application for exenatide's use in adult type 2 diabetes patients in China, and sales are primarily driven by dulaglutide.

Opportunities and Challenges in the Chinese Market:
The Chinese GLP-1 market is currently dominated by imported drugs. Although domestically produced GLP-1 drugs such as losartan (long-acting) and benalutide have been approved for type 2 diabetes treatment, their sales have been relatively modest compared to imported GLP-1 drugs. However, with the increasing demand and ongoing research and development efforts, even the established global players are expanding their presence in the Chinese market.

As China grapples with the challenges of obesity and diabetes, the market potential for GLP-1 drugs is significant. With a large population affected by these conditions, the demand for safe and effective treatments is on the rise. The growth of the GLP-1 market in China presents opportunities for both domestic and international pharmaceutical companies. Continued research, development, and market expansion efforts in the GLP-1 sector will play a crucial role in addressing the healthcare needs of millions of individuals in China.
