Going nuts for nuts: Singapore start-up hopes to carve out a niche with premium, customisable nut butters

Food Navigator 2023-11-22

Singapore-based start-up Noce Nuts is stirring up excitement in the nut butter scene by offering a unique twist—customizable nut butters. Launched in August 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Noce Nuts set out to redefine the nut butter experience by introducing a range of distinctive and creative flavors that allow consumers to tailor their spreads to their taste preferences. The company, a trailblazer in the realm of personalized nut butters, is making waves with its premium, high-quality offerings, even if it means a slightly higher price tag compared to conventional options.

For Noce Nuts, nut butters are more than just a plain spread—they are an opportunity to explore diverse and enticing flavors. Co-founder Kenny Chong explains, "Our love for nuts, and a desire for a healthy yet delicious spread inspired us to create Noce, which means 'nut' in Italian. It's pivotal to carve out a distinct niche. In our case, it revolves around offering customizable nut butters crafted from pure, high-quality ingredients."

The BYOB concept takes on a new meaning here—Build Your Own Butter. Noce Nuts prides itself on being the first in Singapore to provide customers with the ability to customize their nut butters according to preferred taste, texture, and even nutritional preferences such as reduced sugar and salt options.

Chong notes the growing sophistication of consumers' palates, stating, "Everyone has different preferences when it comes to texture, sweetness, and saltiness. Our customers come to us because they enjoy being able to curate their butters to their preferred taste and texture, and I guess this makes them willing to pay a premium for our products."

While the customizability sets Noce Nuts apart, it also poses logistical challenges due to the need to maintain a diverse inventory. Operating on a no-stock basis, the company manages this challenge to meet individual customer needs.

The product lineup boasts an array of nut butters, including Cashew, Pistachio, Almond, Hazelnut, Sesame, Peanut Butter, Pecan Nut, and Macadamia Nut. Specialized flavors such as Earl Grey, Hojicha, and Matcha, available in unsalted and unsweetened versions, add a unique touch to the offerings.

Flavors like Pistachio and the tea-infused butters have garnered popularity, capitalizing on the scarcity of such options in the Singapore market. Noce Nuts acknowledges the diverse uses of their products, noting their appeal to breastfeeding moms as a nutritious snack that supports lactation.

Each product is packaged in a standard 200g bottle, with the flexibility to provide specialized packaging for bulk or B2B orders of 1kg and above. Noce Nuts emphasizes the purity of its nut butters, ensuring they are vegan-friendly and free from preservatives, additives, and emulsifiers.

Currently available through its website and the Just Dabao platform—an initiative aimed at reducing food wastage in Singapore—Noce Nuts has its sights set on global expansion. While acknowledging the competitiveness of the digital marketplace, the company is confident that innovation and a commitment to delivering a superior product will continue to drive its success. As Chong succinctly puts it, "We believe that the best kind of marketing comes in the form of a really good product!"
