Chinese National Health Commission Greenlights New Additions to Food Offerings

In a recent announcement under document No. 10 of 2023, the Chinese National Health Commission has given its approval for the inclusion of nine "Three New Foods," with a spotlight on Paraguay Holly Leaves, commonly known as Yerba Mate Tea.

In adherence to the stipulations outlined in the "Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China," the regulatory body diligently facilitated a comprehensive review process. This involved the concerted efforts of expert panels, meticulously assessing applications for new food raw materials and food additive varieties. Notably, the evaluation encompassed Paraguay Holly Leaves, recognized as mate tea leaves, and explored new food additive varieties, including edible tannins. Among the substances subjected to safety assessments were N, N'-hexyl-1,6-bis[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionamide] and three other related materials integral to the new food landscape.

The review process, guided by the stringent provisions of the Food Safety Law, rigorously examined the safety and suitability of these substances for integration into the realm of food-related products.
