Chinese National Health Commission Unveiling Innovative Food Additions: Paraguayan Holly Leaves, Yeast Protein, and Catechins Hit the Shelves
The Chinese National Health Commission has approved three novel food components, introducing Paraguayan Holly Leaves (Mate Tea Leaves), Yeast Protein, and Catechins into the realm of permissible food ingredients. This announcement, outlined in the "Three New Foods," signifies a leap forward in diversifying the choices available to consumers.
Paraguayan Holly Leaves (Mate Tea Leaves)
Paraguayan Holly Leaves, derived from Ilex Paraguayensis leaves, undergo meticulous processes including picking, roasting, chopping, and drying. Rich in carbohydrates, crude fiber, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, these leaves also contain polyphenols, flavonoids, and saponins. Recognized as "generally recognized as safe (GRAS)" in the United States and approved in various countries, caution is advised for infants, pregnant, and lactating women due to insufficient safety data.
Yeast Protein
Sourced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast Protein boasts a protein content of ≥70.0g/100g, alongside fat, dietary fiber, and water. With approval in the United States and the European Union, the safety assessment emphasizes restrictions for infants, pregnant, and lactating women. Labels are required to indicate unsuitable groups, adhering to the principle of risk prevention.
Catechins
Catechins, extracted from tea leaves, offer a blend of health benefits with components like epicatechin and epigallocatechin. Japan recognizes green tea catechin as a functional ingredient in health foods, setting daily consumption limits. Safety assessments prioritize restrictions for infants, pregnant, and lactating women, with mandatory labeling indicating suitability and consumption limits.
New Food Additive Varieties
Edible Tannins
Edible tannins, traditionally used in rice wine and beer processing, extend their application to sugar making. The move aligns with Japan's acceptance of edible tannins as a processing aid in various foods, emphasizing the substance's compliance with quality specifications.
Ethyl Acetate
Widening its usage from preparing wine and yeast extract processing to tea extract processing, ethyl acetate gains approval. Meeting quality standards, it acts as an extraction solvent for tea polyphenols and theanine, aligning with international safety standards.
New Varieties of Food-Related Products
N,N' ;-self base-1,6-two[3-(3 ) propionamide]
Approved for use in rubber, polyethylene, polypropylene, and now polyurethane conveyor belts, this substance acts as an antioxidant, slowing down thermal oxidative degradation.
2,2-bis[[3[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]-1-oxopropoxy]methyl]-1,3-propanyl Diyl-3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenylpropionate;tetrakis[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate ] Pentaerythritol ester
Accepted in rubber, paints, coatings, adhesives, and now PU conveyor belts, this antioxidant proves essential in slowing thermal oxidative degradation, aligning with international standards.
Coffee Grounds
Utilized as a filler in plastic materials, coffee grounds, approved by the U.S. FDA and the European Commission, enhance the mechanical properties of materials and improve molding processing and product performance.
Butyl Methacrylate, Methyl Methacrylate, n-Butyl Acrylate, and 1,4-Butanediol Dimethacrylate Polymer
Insoluble in water and organic solvents, this polymer, approved for use in food contact paints and coatings, acts as a main film-forming substance with strong adhesion and corrosion resistance, especially suitable for water-based coatings.
This comprehensive expansion of permissible food ingredients and additives reflects a commitment to innovation and safety, providing consumers with a diverse range of choices while prioritizing health and well-being.
