Culinary Innovation Takes Center Stage at the 3rd Nutrition Science and Technology Symposium
Amidst the pivotal year of 2023, marked by the unfolding "Healthy China 2030" initiative and the "14th Five-Year Plan," consumer emphasis on health has catalyzed advancements in the nutrition and health sector. Echoing this momentum, the 3rd Nutrition Science and Technology Innovation Symposium concluded successfully in Guangzhou on November 22-23. The symposium, spearheaded by the Chinese Nutrition Society and the China Food Additives and Ingredients Association, and orchestrated by the Zhongyinghui Nutrition and Health Research Institute, showcased a dynamic collaboration with the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Qingdao University, and the Nutrition and Health Research Institute of Wuhan University of Science and Technology.
In his opening address, Researcher Yang Xiaoguang, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Nutrition Society, highlighted the pivotal role of science and technology in propelling high-quality development in nutrition and health. The symposium, he emphasized, aimed to foster exchanges, address challenges, spur innovation, and bridge the gap between industrial demand and scientific supply.
Du Yazheng, Chairman of China Food Additives and Ingredients Association, extended a warm welcome, emphasizing the profound impact of the food additives and ingredients industry on scientific and technological innovation. The conference, he noted, sought to forge a direct platform for translating cutting-edge nutritional research into tangible industrial applications.
Ding Gangqiang, Director of the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, underscored the urgency for collaborative efforts in addressing the rising incidence of chronic diseases due to nutritional imbalances. The symposium, he asserted, served as a crucial nexus for integrating academia and industry, accelerating research translation, and propelling innovation in nutritional science and technology.
Under the theme "Nutrition and Health: From Basic Science to Industrial Application," the symposium featured major forums and reports, with experts delving into topics ranging from the revision of dietary guidelines to the impact of dietary fats on health. Professor Jin Zhengyu, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, explored the intricate connection between carbohydrates and human health, shedding light on the development and safety assessment of various carbohydrates.
In a special segment titled "Healthy Ingredients·Product Innovation·Healthy Future," industry leaders and experts discussed opportunities and challenges in health food research and development, elderly nutrition, and the latest applications of popular food ingredients. Researcher Wang Yingyao of the Chinese Nutrition Society explored the global trends in nutritional ingredient labeling and offered insights into the health implications for prepackaged foods.
A dedicated "GI Industry Development Forum" highlighted the role of glycemic index (GI) in health, with discussions focusing on technological innovation, the construction of standard systems, and the promotion of low GI labeling and certification.
As the symposium concluded, Researcher Wang Yingyao expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from colleagues in the nutrition and industry sectors. Emphasizing the conference's alignment with the recently released "National Innovation Index Report 2022-2023," she noted the significant progress in China's global innovation ranking. The successful symposium, she concluded, would propel cross-integration, foster industry exchanges, and inject fresh perspectives into the nutrition and health sector's ongoing development.
