Brazilian Food Tech Startups Tackle Climate Impact
In the wake of record-breaking temperatures plaguing Brazil, a surge of innovative food technology startups is reshaping the nation's agrifood landscape. Driven by a shared commitment to combat climate change, these ventures are introducing novel ingredients and pioneering solutions to foster sustainability in the food industry.
Championing Agrifood-Tech Innovation
In 2022, Brazilian agrifood-tech startups secured nearly half of all Latin American investments. Presently, there are approximately 300 startups in Brazil dedicated solely to groundbreaking ingredients and emerging food trends. The European Institute of Innovation and Technology's (EIT) Food Accelerator Network program has recently extended its support to Brazil, recognizing its pivotal role in global agricultural production.
Benoit Buntinx, Director of Business Creation at EIT Food, emphasized Brazil's capability to tackle local and global agrifood challenges through technological innovation. The Brazilian initiative focuses on food bioprocessing, next-gen plant-based solutions, and sustainable food packaging.
Flourishing New Product Development
The growth of ingredient startups in Brazil is witnessing a surge, encompassing plant-based, fermentation-based, and cultivated meat enterprises. The Good Food Institute (GFI) Brazil reports a significant rise in startups employing innovative technologies, with around ten newcomers dedicated to serving the sector.
These startups, including Weecaps and Up&Zymes, are at the forefront of developing products like encapsulated omegas and upcycled ingredients through precision fermentation and synthetic biology, ensuring better accessibility and enhanced experiences for flexitarian consumers.
Diversifying Protein Sources
Brazil holds immense potential for diversifying protein sources. Innovative startups like Hakkuna (insect proteins), Typcal (mycoproteins from mycelium biomass fermentation), and Tekohá Foods (biomass fermentation) are spearheading the development of new protein offerings. Some companies are incorporating Brazilian species, such as beans, into their portfolios, emphasizing sustainable practices and local biodiversity.
Revolutionizing Animal Ingredients
Cellva Ingredients stands out as the first Brazilian company to use cell cultures in developing animal ingredients. Through a meticulous process, Cellva produces cultivated pork fat without raising or slaughtering animals, aligning with ethical and environmental concerns in traditional food production. Sergio Pinto, CEO of Cellva, highlights the opportunity Brazil's rich agricultural landscape provides for embracing sustainable practices.
Preserving Brazil's Biomes
In collaboration with FoodTech Hub Brazil, the Good Food Institute (GFI) launched the Biomes program in 2021, aiming to promote research involving native plant species. This initiative seeks to extract ingredients for plant-based products, making them both appealing and sustainable. Brazil's six distinct biomes house over 46,000 plant species, presenting a vast opportunity for developing unique, locally sourced ingredients.
Infrastructure Challenges and Future Prospects
While Brazil's agrifood sector is rapidly innovating, challenges persist. The lack of infrastructure, particularly pilot plants for large-scale validation of technologies like fermentation and cultivated meat, hinders progress. However, industry stakeholders are actively engaging in discussions to create viable infrastructures, indicating a promising future for Brazil's agrifood innovation landscape.
