Brazil registered a total of 249 pesticides in 2023, and the proportion of biological products has increased year by year

According to the latest report of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, a total of 641 pesticides were registered in Brazil in 2022; In 2023 (up to now) a total of 249 pesticides have been registered; Between 2000 and 2023, 5,354 pesticides have been registered in Brazil.

Among them, 641 products registered in 2022, including 279 products belonging to the technical category, are used in industrial production and will not be directly used in Brazilian crops, accounting for 43%, 125 products belong to biological agents, accounting for 21%, 237 are chemical products, accounting for 36%, including 202 used molecular products and 35 new chemical molecular products. CropLife Brazil says the annual number of registered pesticides does not represent the total number of pesticides actually used by farmers in their fields, since the statistics include both industrial products, biologics and chemicals used in finished products.

Of the products registered between 2000 and 2023 (as of now), 58% are used in agricultural production (46% are chemical pesticides, 12% are biopesticides), and 42% are technicals. With regard to new pesticide molecules, only 106 have been approved and are likely already in use in major competitor markets.

In addition, CropLife Brazil found that approval of new active ingredients in Brazil was restricted; With regard to bioproducts, the number of such products has risen since 2020 to a record high of 85 more than the past average, a figure that shows the growing interest in sustainable products and the need for technological integration to overcome the challenges facing agriculture. In addition, Brazil offers farmers fewer new products than other important agricultural countries. As a result, Brazil is always late to get new products than its competitors. 

CropLife concluded that regulatory modernization could lead to more modern molecules and more sustainable agricultural options.
