Acids and bases are classified by their pH, a scale from 0 to 14 that measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. A pH below 7 indicates acidity, while a pH above 7 means the solution is basic or alkaline. Neutral substances have a pH of exactly 7. The pH value depends on the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in the solution.
What is Chlorine?
Chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas with a strong, unpleasant smell. It is a reactive halogen with atomic number 17. Discovered in 1774, chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant and bleaching agent. While toxic in its pure form, small amounts are safely used in water treatment and sanitation.
Is Chlorine an Acid or Base?
Pure chlorine gas itself is neither an acid nor a base since it does not contain hydrogen ions (H+). Therefore, it does not have a pH. However, when chlorine dissolves in water, it reacts to form hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hypochlorous acid (HClO), making the solution acidic.
The pH of a chlorine-containing solution varies depending on how chlorine interacts with other substances. When chlorine gas dissolves in water, it produces acidic compounds that lower the pH and create an acidic environment.
What is Bleach?
Bleach commonly refers to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), a compound made by reacting chlorine gas with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). This process produces a strong alkaline (basic) solution with a pH between 13 and 14. Bleach is widely used for disinfecting and whitening due to its powerful oxidizing properties.
Industrially, bleach is made by electrolysis of saltwater or by the Hooker process, where chlorine gas is bubbled through cold, diluted sodium hydroxide. Proper temperature control prevents unwanted by-products like sodium chlorate.
Is Bleach an Acid or Base?
Bleach is a strong base due to the presence of sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide. Its high pH makes it effective at killing germs but also corrosive. Household bleach solutions generally have a strongly alkaline pH around 13, which helps with disinfecting and stain removal.

Chlorine gas alone is neither an acid nor a base. But when it dissolves in water, it forms acidic compounds. Bleach, on the other hand, is a strong base. Both chlorine and bleach have important industrial and household uses, from water purification to cleaning and disinfection.
