Taking stock of the research results of bio-based products of Chinese coating giants

ECHEMI 2023-12-28

The global production of bio-based chemicals and polymer materials has now reached an annual output of 50 million tons, and its annual output value reached US$10 billion to US$15 billion in 2022. As early as 20 years ago, Europe, the United States, Japan and other countries have begun to study new bio-based coating technologies. Under this circumstance, a lot of research has been carried out on the modification of modified polyurethane, epoxy vegetable oil and alkyd resin using vegetable oil as raw material.

Chinese companies are also investing a lot of energy in the research of bio-based coatings.

Opmaterial

Opmaterial has spent nearly ten years developing bio-based aqueous dispersions through multi-bulk polymerization technology and the use of biomonomers to modify polymerized vegetable oils. According to reports, the product has the following characteristics: the raw materials are renewable; there is no pollution and no harmful substances are produced during the production and use of the product, and it is a green and environmentally friendly product; the waste coating film can be degraded, and the degraded products are non-toxic and harmless, and will not cause pollution to the environment; the product has bright color and good toning properties. The coating film is tough and resistant to cracking.

SKSHU

SKSHU has been established for 20 years and is committed to creating a one-stop integrated system of green building materials in the engineering field that integrates interior and exterior wall coatings, waterproofing, insulation, industrial coatings, floors, new home materials, base materials, and construction services.

In the field of bio-based coatings, SKSHU invented a "plant-based anti-formaldehyde antibacterial and easy-to-clean interior wall paint". Its plant-based emulsion is mainly made from wood fibers extracted from plant straws, which are fermented and filtered to obtain bio-based monomers. The ketone structure is introduced into the bio-based emulsion (containing 34% plant-extracted materials) through emulsion polymerization. It is renewable, easily degradable, non-polluting to the environment, and non-harmful to the human body. It fills the gap in the application of plant-based emulsions in the field of wall paint for anti-fouling and formaldehyde removal. Its polyurethane waterproof coatings with a bio-based content of over 70%.

Chenyang Waterborne Paint

Hebei Chenyang Industry And Trade Group Co., Ltd was established in 1998. It is a modern group company integrating waterborne paint production, building materials trade, engineering construction, etc., focusing on the research and development, production and promotion of waterborne paint.

In the field of bio-based coatings, Chenyang Waterborne Paint has released a plant-based children's water paint, which is based on DSM's Discovery® SP-8407 bio-based resin technology and uses plant-based emulsion,  and rich in natural plant ingredients and uses safer plant renewable resources to replace petroleum resources in coatings (bio-based material content is more than 30%).

BADESE

Founded in 1996, BADESE has become a large-scale private high-tech enterprise group in China's coatings industry that integrates authoritative R&D, production and sales of coatings.

In the field of bio-based coatings, BADESE has launched a plant-based water paint, which is based on bio-based technology in cooperation with chemical giants such as DuPont. The raw materials are extracted from corn, cassava, soybeans and other edible crops, replacing some petroleum and coal chemical derivatives in the emulsion, designed and developed high-tech interior wall water paint products, with four core technologies: Bio-based technology + decomposing formaldehyde + antibacterial technology + dazzling technology.

Carpoly

Founded in 1993, Carpoly is a well-known paint and coating solutions provider in China and one of the top 40 paint companies in the world. In the field of bio-based coatings, as early as 2020, Carpoly successfully developed a technologically innovative product: Origin Gold Full-effect Wall Paint. This product extracts natural plant essence and is produced using renewable resource bio-based raw materials and advanced technical processes. It contains 31% bio-based ingredients.

With the rapid development of high technology, a new type of environmentally friendly, low-carbon and green bio-based materials that replace petrochemical products as raw materials will surely develop rapidly. Bio-based materials will make great strides in fuels, plastics, coatings, adhesives, fibers, rubber, etc. in the near future.
