The European Parliament banned imported food containing Thiacloprid
Recently, the European Parliament rejected the European Commission's proposal to allow the import of more than 30 products containing residues of the pesticide Thiacloprid. The proposal was rejected by 386 votes in favor to 186 against, with 52 abstentions.
The rejection means that the maximum residue limit (MRL) for Thiacloprid in imported food will remain at zero. According to EU regulations, MRL is the maximum allowable pesticide residue level in food or feed, when the EU bans a pesticide, the MRL of the substance on imported products is set at 0.01mg/kg, that is, zero residue of the technical.
Thiacloprid is a new chloronicotinyl insecticide that can be widely used on many crops to control stinging and chewing mouthparts pests, but because of its impact on bees and other pollinators, it has been gradually restricted in the European Union since 2013.
This is the second recent rejection by the European Parliament on the issue of pesticide residues in imported products.
In December last year, the European Parliament opposed the sale of rice containing Tricyclazole on the EU market, citing health and environmental concerns, as well as the principle of reciprocity between European and third-country food producers. Tricyclazole is a special thiazole fungicide for preventing and controlling rice blast, which belongs to the thiazole class. Its bactericidal mechanism is mainly to inhibit the formation of appressorium melanin, thus inhibiting spore germination and appressorium formation, preventing pathogen invasion and reducing the production of rice blast spores.
