The collaboration between NVIDIA and Meta, announced during the JPM Conference, revolves around the BioNeMo platform, a generative AI drug discovery platform. This partnership further solidifies NVIDIA's success in the life sciences industry, specifically in the field of AI, and with continued progress in AI and drug discovery, the company's valuation is expected to soar, propelling the wealth of its stakeholders, including Huang Renxun.

 

Meta's decision to procure such a significant number of H100 graphics cards from NVIDIA is intriguing, especially considering Meta's previous claims of developing its own chips and not relying on NVIDIA. The shift in strategy indicates a substantial investment in artificial intelligence, making it Meta's primary focus in 2024. Additionally, Meta plans to open-source its AI models, including the newly developed Llama3, as an alternative to the OpenAI ChatGPT model. This strategic direction not only signifies a significant investment in AI but also reflects Meta's willingness to embrace emerging technologies that have the potential to reshape the digital landscape.

This announcement by Mark Zuckerberg had an immediate impact on Meta's stock price, causing a more than 2% increase in their closing price on the same day. Simultaneously, NVIDIA's stock price witnessed a rise of 4.17%, surpassing a market capitalization of $1.4 trillion. In early 2023, NVIDIA made a bold statement by entering the field of AI-driven pharmaceuticals, leveraging large-scale molecular language models and supercomputers. Within a year, NVIDIA invested in nine AI pharmaceutical companies of varying scales, including CHARM Therapeutics, Generate:Biomedicines, Inceptive, Superluminal Medicines, Genesis Therapeutics, Evozyne, and Iambic Therapeutics (formerly known as Entos). Their presence was notably felt in the substantial financing of AI pharmaceuticals in the latter half of the year.

 

During the JPM Conference in 2024, NVIDIA made three significant announcements that have had a profound impact on drug development, marking its foray into the pharmaceutical industry. On January 8th, NVIDIA introduced BioNeMo, a cloud-based generative AI platform aimed at enabling faster drug discovery and design, which is set to enter the testing phase later this month. BioNeMo offers services for developing, customizing, and deploying foundational models for drug discovery. The platform continues to expand its repertoire of pre-trained biological molecular AI models, including protein structure prediction, protein sequence generation, molecular optimization, generative chemistry, and docking prediction models.

 

The drug discovery teams are utilizing BioNeMo to invent or customize proprietary AI models with specific data. Software companies specializing in drug discovery, such as Techbios and major pharmaceutical companies, are integrating BioNeMo Cloud APIs (to be released for testing this month) into their workflows, providing computer-aided drug discovery capabilities. The Cloud APIs will encompass foundational models from three sources: models invented by NVIDIA, such as the MolMIM generative chemistry model for small molecule generation; open-source models pioneered by global research teams and curated and optimized by NVIDIA, such as OpenFold protein prediction AI; and proprietary models developed by NVIDIA's partners, such as Recursion's Phenom-Beta for embedding cellular microscope images.
