Novartis Reports $45.4 Billion in Revenue for 2023, Pluvicto, Its Radiopharmaceutical, Surges by 261%

ECHEMI 2024-02-02

Novartis, one of the leading multinational pharmaceutical companies, recently disclosed its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2023. The company's revenue for the year reached an impressive $45.4 billion, representing a growth rate of 10%. Notably, Novartis witnessed a remarkable surge in sales of its radiopharmaceutical Pluvicto, which recorded a staggering increase of 261%.

Financial Performance:

Novartis reported a net sales figure of $11.423 billion for the fourth quarter of 2023, marking a growth rate of 10%. The company's core operating income also experienced a significant boost, rising by 13% compared to the previous year. Moreover, the core net profit soared by 11%, reaching approximately $3.13 billion. Although these figures fell slightly below analysts' estimates of around $3.3 billion, Novartis achieved a commendable global net sales growth of 10% for the year, amounting to $45.4 billion.

Pluvicto's Remarkable Growth:

Novartis' CEO, Vas Narasimhan, expressed satisfaction with the company's overall performance, particularly highlighting the impressive growth of its key products. Pluvicto, a radiopharmaceutical used in the treatment of PSMA-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), experienced an exceptional surge in sales, recording an astounding growth rate of 261%. Pluvicto, which gained FDA approval in March 2022, generated an impressive revenue of $980 million in 2023.

Other Noteworthy Products:

Apart from Pluvicto, Novartis witnessed strong sales performance from several other key products. Entresto, a drug for heart failure, achieved a revenue of $1.635 billion in the fourth quarter, with an annual sales figure of $6.035 billion. Cosentyx, a treatment for psoriasis, generated $1.3 billion in the fourth quarter and reached a total revenue of $4.98 billion for the year. Additionally, Kesimpta, a drug for multiple sclerosis, and Kisqali, a drug for breast cancer, recorded sales figures of $641 million and $610 million, respectively.

Future Outlook:

Looking ahead to the second half of 2024, Novartis anticipates a moderate single-digit growth in net sales compared to 2023 for Entresto in the United States, without facing competition from generic drugs. In the fourth quarter of 2023, competition from generics caused a three-percentage-point decline in Novartis' growth. To achieve this growth target, Novartis plans to submit several important regulatory applications in 2024, including atrasentan for the treatment of IgA nephropathy (IgAN), remibrutinib for chronic spontaneous urticaria, and iptacopan, a factor B inhibitor, for the treatment of IgAN and C3 glomerulopathy.

Novartis has delivered robust financial results for 2023, with a significant increase in revenue driven by the strong performance of key products such as Pluvicto, Entresto, and Cosentyx. The company remains focused on its core therapeutic areas, including cardiovascular, renal-metabolic, immunology, and neurology-oncology. As Novartis progresses into 2024, it aims to sustain growth through continued innovation and strategic developments in its product portfolio.
