Sino Cell Tech's Trailblazing Move on the Horizon

ECHEMI 2024-02-04

In the midst of a challenging period for the pharmaceutical industry, one company has emerged as a game-changer. Sino Cell Tech, since the launch of its first product in 2021, has experienced explosive revenue growth, with a staggering 408.5-fold increase in 2021 and a further 6.61-fold increase in 2022. Building on this success, Sino Cell Tech recently revealed its performance forecast for 2023, projecting a remarkable 81.12%-86.98% year-on-year revenue growth. Behind these impressive results lies Sino Cell Tech's ultimate strategy, poised to revolutionize the industry.

Unveiling a Blockbuster Product:

Sino Cell Tech attributes its revenue surge primarily to the substantial growth in sales of its flagship product, "Anjiayin." Anjiayin is the first domestically developed recombinant factor VIII therapy approved for the treatment of rare disease Hemophilia A. Previously, the domestic market for recombinant factor VIII was monopolized by foreign companies such as Bayer, Baxter, and Pfizer, resulting in high prices and inadequate supply. However, Sino Cell Tech's improved manufacturing process has significantly increased the annual production capacity of recombinant factor VIII to 10 billion international units (IU), approaching the combined output of numerous global manufacturers. Leveraging its capacity and cost advantages, Sino Cell Tech not only shattered the import monopoly but also reduced prices, reshaping the market landscape and benefiting a greater number of Hemophilia A patients. Anjiayin achieved sales of 134 million yuan in its first year (2021), surpassed the 1 billion yuan mark in 2022, and is projected to nearly double sales in 2023, reaching approximately 1.9 billion yuan.

Competition and Future Opportunities:

Although Sino Cell Tech faces increased competition with the approvals of recombinant factor VIII products from other companies such as Zhongda Tianqing and Rongsheng Pharmaceuticals in August and September 2023, respectively, along with existing foreign players, the domestic market still has immense room for growth. With approximately 140,000 Hemophilia A patients in China and theoretical demand for 4.49 million and 9.72 million vials of human recombinant factor VIII for "on-demand treatment" and "prophylactic treatment," respectively, the market penetration of domestic products is far from saturated. Furthermore, considering the significant treatment demand for Hemophilia A patients in developing countries, Sino Cell Tech has set its sights on the vast overseas market. The company has already signed contracts with regional partners in India, Turkey, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Colombia, intending to facilitate the commercialization of Anjiayin in these regions, with plans to enter the overseas market progressively starting from 2025.

Diversifying with Vaccines:

In addition to its focus on innovative biopharmaceuticals, Sino Cell Tech has ventured into the vaccine sector. Currently, the company has two vaccine products included in emergency use. These are the SCTV01C vaccine, a recombinant trimeric protein vaccine targeting the Alpha/Beta variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, launched in December 2022, and the SCTV01E vaccine, a recombinant trimeric protein vaccine targeting the Alpha/Beta/Delta/Omicron variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, launched in March 2023. However, considering the saturation of the COVID-19 vaccine market as the majority of the population becomes infected or vaccinated, the profitability of Sino Cell Tech's COVID-19 vaccine products remains limited. The company's core research and development focus lies in the fourteen-valent HPV vaccine, currently undergoing Phase III clinical trials. With strong demand for HPV vaccines in the domestic market, which grew from approximately 200 million yuan in 2017 to around 40 billion yuan in 2022, there is still significant room for growth, as the market penetration in China stands at only 11%. By bypassing weaker competitors such as two-valent and four-valent vaccines and the fiercely competitive nine-valent vaccine, Sino Cell Tech has taken the lead in developing the fourteen-valent HPV vaccine. Covering all twelve high-risk carcinogenic HPV strains identified by the World Health Organization, as well as the two major strains causing genital warts, the fourteen-valent HPV vaccine offers a 96% protection rate compared to the 92% protection rate of the nine-valent vaccine, making it more competitive in the market. The only constraint on Sino Cell Tech's HPV vaccine is its regulatory approval.

Sino Cell Tech has established itself as a trailblazer in the pharmaceutical industry, fueled by the remarkable success of its flagship product, Anjiayin, and its strategic foray into the HPV vaccine sector.
