For adults, there are 9 essential amino acids, namely: lysine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, methionine, threonine, isoleucine, leucine, valine, and histidine. Furthermore, newborns and young children under the age of four require histidine. For preterm newborns, taurine, arginine, cysteine, and tyrosine are also necessary.
Food is the only source of essential amino acids; otherwise, the body's nitrogen balance may be upset and human health may be impacted. The fundamental determinant of the nutritional value of protein in food is whether or not the types, amounts, and ratios of important amino acids are comparable to what the human body requires. Thus, increasing the nutritional content of protein may be achieved by combining diverse plant proteins as well as animal proteins for intake.
Fatigue, anxiety, sadness, and delayed adolescent development are among the symptoms that can result from consuming insufficient amounts of necessary amino acids. Most of these symptoms are caused by insufficient protein synthesis in the body due to a lack of essential amino acids.
Non essential amino acids
They can be produced by the body from other nutrients or acquired through diet. Non-essential amino acids are not lacking in the body; rather, because the body is capable of synthesizing them, food is not required to provide them. Alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, and serine are the nine forms of non-essential amino acids that are often present.
While they are equally important for the body's growth, development, and maintenance, the absence of non-essential amino acids has less of an effect on the body than that of essential amino acids since they may be synthesized through internal metabolic pathways.

Whether the human body can synthesize on its own is the primary distinction between the two. Non essential amino acids can be naturally synthesized, but essential amino acids must be obtained from external food sources. Lack of essential amino acids has serious effects, but the impact of the lack of non essential amino acids is relatively small.
Sources of essential vs non essential amino acids
Essential amino acids
Lean meat, milk, eggs, and fish are all good choices for supplementing essential amino acids. Because they contain abundant amino acids and have a protein structure similar to that of the human body, they are beneficial for human absorption. Soybeans and oats are good sources of plant protein, and it is not wise to supplement protein with grains, fruits, and vegetables. Many common grains, such as rice, lack the essential lysine for the human body. Meat cannot provide enough lysine. However, legumes such as soybeans and red beans are rich in lysine. Therefore, mixing different types of food for consumption is beneficial for improving protein quality.
In addition, nuts, onions, garlic, mushrooms, animal liver, etc. are also good sources of different essential amino acids. Different types of essential amino acids have different effects. For example, threonine obtained from animal liver can prevent fat accumulation in the liver and enhance human immune function; The methionine contained in garlic and onions has a strong antioxidant effect, which is beneficial for clearing harmful substances such as heavy metals in the human body.
Non essential amino acids
Although the human body can synthesize non essential amino acids on its own, there is no need to consider obtaining non essential amino acids from external sources.
