Iodide (I–), hydroxide (OH–), and chloride (Cl–) are examples of anions, and hydrogen (H+), potassium (K+), and calcium (Ca2+) are common cations.
What is Phosphorous?
Hennig Brandt was the first one to discover Phosphorus in 1669. In his experiment, he evaporated urine kept on heating the residue to high temperatures, and then distilled phosphorus vapor, He later collected them with condensation in a water solution. Phosphorous is a necessary component for the existence of organisms and is found in nature in a variety of allotropic forms.
Phosphorus exists in white, red, and black color variants. It is only found in the natural world as phosphates, which are made up of one phosphorous atom bound to four oxygen atoms. Phosphorus is never found in its pure form in nature.
Is Phosphorus a Cation or Anion?
When in elemental form, it is neither anion nor cation but can exit as both cation and anion. Most commonly Phosphorus typically gains three electrons to become an anion. In this state, it has a net atomic charge of -3 and is represented as P3-. But depending on the special chemical conditions, Phosphorus can form both cations and anions depending on the specific chemical conditions.
For example, when it is present in compounds like tetraphenylphosphonium chloride also termed as PPh₄⁺, phosphorus is in the form of a cation meaning it is positively charged and has lost its electrons. But in some ionic compounds (like sodium phosphate (Na₃PO₄), phosphate ions can exist like PO₄³⁻ or phosphide ions termed as P³⁻. Here, P is seen accepting electronics to become negatively charged, a.k.a anion.
Applications of Phosphorous as a Cation:
The ionic behavior of Phosphorous has many applications in the industry especially when it comes to phosphate ions also termed PO₄³⁻. Most commonly used in fertilizers, PO₄³⁻ provides the necessary phosphorus in soil which is utilized by plants for their proper growth and significantly increases crop production. A very crucial compound for the fertility of agricultural soil.
It is also very significant in the production of detergents and several cleaning products for domestic use where it improves cleaning efficiency. (the use is declining due to environmental concerns). It is also used in many fire-retardant materials and has a very significant status in industries related to textiles and plastics. It also plays a vital role in energy transfer and are component of human DNA, making it an essential component of our bodies. Plants also have phosphates in them which are crucial to them as well.
