Hindustan Zinc ranked at top in sustainability index

ECHEMI 2018-11-05

Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (HZL), a Vedanta Group company and India’s only integrated zinc-lead-silver producer, has announced that it has been ranked first in Environment category and overall fifth in the Metals & Mining sector by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). The company competed with 58 metals & mining majors including Newmont Mining, Teck Resources, Rio Tinto, etc.

According to a company press release, the significant improvement in ranking from the previous year was made possible by several new initiatives & disclosures including Life Cycle Assessment, stakeholder perception survey, tax transparency report, approval of science based target, internal carbon pricing, diversity & inclusion policy, among others.

Launched in 1999, the DJSI World is the gold standard for corporate sustainability and is the first global index to track leading sustainability-driven companies based on RobecoSAM’s analysis of financially material environmental, social, and governance factors to convert an average of 600 data points per company into one overall score.

“Sustainability has always been a core value of Hindustan Zinc, which is why we have integrated the best global environment friendly technologies in our operations. We are very glad to be recognised with this ranking in DJSI World, which strengthens our commitment towards zero harm to the environment,” said Mr. Sunil Duggal, CEO, HZL.
