Japan Revises Standards for Food and Food Additives: Key Updates
Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recently announced significant revisions to the standards governing food and food additives. These updates aim to enhance safety regulations and ensure compliance within the industry. On March 4, 2024, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare issued an official announcement, outlining the amendments to the specifications for food and food additives. The revised standards primarily focus on the maximum residue limits for nine types of agricultural chemicals and pesticides found in various food items. The changes are expected to come into effect immediately, with a one-year transition period for six compounds, including Iprodione, Dicloromezotiaz, and Cyflufenamid.
Here are some of the notable revisions:
1. Iprodione: The maximum residue limit for Iprodione in the meat and milk of cattle, pigs, and other terrestrial mammals has been reduced to 0.01 mg/kg from the previous limit of 0.2 mg/kg.
2. Dicloromezotiaz: The revised standard sets a maximum residue limit of 7 mg/kg for Dicloromezotiaz in Chinese cabbage.
3. Cyfluthrin: The maximum residue limit for Cyfluthrin in chicken fat and eggs has been increased to 0.05 mg/kg, up from the previous limit of 0.01 mg/kg.
4. Cyflufenamid: A maximum residue limit of 0.01 mg/kg has been established for Cyflufenamid in the meat of cattle, pigs, and other terrestrial mammals.
5. Dimesulfazet: The revised standard specifies a maximum residue limit of 0.01 mg/kg for Dimesulfazet in rice, including brown rice.
6. 1,4-Dimethylnaphthalene: The maximum residue limit for 1,4-Dimethylnaphthalene in potatoes has been revised to 15 mg/kg.
7. Pydiflumetofen: The revised standard sets a maximum residue limit of 0.1 mg/kg for Pydiflumetofen in beef, fat, liver, kidney, and other edible offal of cattle. The previous limit was 0.03 mg/kg.
8. Buprofezin: A maximum residue limit of 0.05 mg/kg has been established for Buprofezin in honey.
These revisions aim to ensure the safety and quality of food products consumed in Japan by aligning the residue limits with the latest scientific research and regulatory standards. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has provided detailed information about these changes in a document available on their official website.
