PPG Insulating Coatings Used at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas has hosted many well-known sports events in the world and is often published in the headlines of major entertainment news.

This prestigious stadium is located behind Strip, another star stadium. It will officially open in 2020. The construction price is US$1.9 billion. It is one of the few stadiums in the world that has been built with huge investment.

While the 10-story domed venue excels in nearly every aspect, it still faced many daunting challenges during its construction, including the sheer scale of the 1.8 million square foot steel structure weighing 28,000 tons, as well as the construction challenges in the scorching sun and high temperatures of the Mojave Desert.

Working with the Las Vegas team, PPG Paints, Coatings and Specialty Materials played an important role in the design and construction of this spectacular sports venue. This is thanks to a holistic solution that meets the need to fit in with the high-end aesthetics surrounding the Las Vegas Strip and provides long-lasting protection of the building’s interior and exterior components and steel structure and surfaces.

PPG Industrial Coatings used PPG DURANAR® XL coatings in the team’s signature black and silver colors for the shimmering stadium curtain walls. Based on PPG's proprietary 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) formula, the four-layer paint system offers excellent abrasion and chemical resistance and retains its vibrant color decades after exposure to the desert sun.

For this project, PPG also provided thermal insulation coatings containing infrared reflective (IR) pigments, which help lower the building's indoor temperatures while reducing energy consumption.

Its total solar reflectance (TSR) value is superior to conventional paint protection solutions. These technologies also help protect the structural integrity of sports venues and reduce corrosion, warping, thermal expansion and polymer degradation of substrate surfaces.

Nearly 2 million people visit the venue each year to watch professional and college football games, theme events and trendy concerts. Just two years after its opening, it became one of Las Vegas' most attractive buildings.
