PPG Launches Next-Generation BPA- and PFAS-Free Easy-Open Coatings for Aluminum Cans
As aluminum can beverages continue to lead innovation, PPG Industries, a Fortune 500 U.S. coatings, coatings and specialty materials supplier, has released an important industry update. The company has expanded its line of BPA- and PFAS-free aluminum can base coatings, an important advancement for improving product sustainability and maintaining quality assurance for can manufacturers and beverage brands.
The expanded portfolio includes clear core coatings designed for interior and exterior applications on aluminum can lids, commonly known as “easy-open lids.” Each radiator coating solution is customized for a different manufacturing or end-product challenge, starting with everything from flavor preservation to optimizing production efficiency, while ensuring full compliance with global food contact regulations.
“Our beverage closure coating solutions address key challenges facing the beverage industry while meeting food contact regulations,” said Viktoria Tager, PPG global easy-open closure strategic market manager, Packaging Coatings. “Our newest solutions are designed to perform across a wide range of beverage products and processes, making them a long-standing, proven choice for the metal packaging industry.”
The three portfolio expansions include:
PPG Innovel Pro PPG2489: This workhorse product line includes an internal coating solution designed to support high-speed stamping lines and withstand demanding production conditions. Its versatility makes it ideal for a wide range of beverages, including soda, ready-to-drink beverages, beer and wine. In addition, the solution reduces the overall carbon footprint by up to 20% and achieves high thermal stability with low film weight.
PPG Innovel EVO PPG6720: Another internal waterborne coating solution developed specifically for beer applications, it reduces volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and provides an extremely durable alternative to traditional solvent-based coatings. Designed for improved performance, it is particularly suitable for heat-linked and pasteurized processes.
PPG iSENSE PPG5018: Available in gold and clear finishes, the exterior coating solution is optimized for high-speed production lines and designed to provide consistent protection for global manufacturing operations.
Customized with Bisphenol A-non-interpreted (BPA-NI) and Per- and Poly-fluoroalkyl Substances-non-interpreted (PFAS-NI), the packaging meets growing regulatory requirements and steps by beverage brands to eliminate potentially hazardous chemicals from packaging materials.
