DNA & Cosmetics consortium establishes genetic signature database of cosmetic biological resources
The founding members of the DNA & Cosmetics consortium - Clarins, Croda Beauty Actives, DNA Gensee, Greentech, L'Oréal and Nuxe, announces progress in the development of a library of genetic "signatures" of botanical resources (plants and algae) for use in cosmetics and fragrances.
Creation of the database prototype has now started. The work is based on collaboration with botanical gardens and/or specialized greenhouses to find botanically verified plant samples and determine their genetic characteristics. This in-depth work includes studying closely related species and creating appropriate tools to absolutely certify plant resources.
These technologies are based on genetic tools developed by the DNA Gensee laboratory, which "read" the DNA barcodes on plants and algae to ensure high reliability of their certification and thus guarantee the traceability of plant raw materials, with a strong desire to increase transparency and security of supply.
At the same time, the consortium became more international through the arrival of major manufacturers of cosmetic raw materials or finished products. "Joining the DNA & Cosmetics consortium reflects a shared desire to guarantee the authenticity and transparency of raw materials," the consortium said in a statement.
