Pgmea vs. pgme: from chemical property, industrial application to market analysis

ECHEMI 2024-04-19

Pgmea solvent and pgme solvent are both alcohol ethers based on propylene oxide. As organic solvents, they have a wide range of industrial and commercial uses in inks, coatings, semiconductors and other fields. Learn through this article about pgmea vs. pgme from chemical property, industrial application to market analysis.

Pgmea vs. pgme: chemical property

Pgmea (propylene glycol methyl ether acetate), or 1-methoxy-2-propanol acetate is P-type glycol ether, colorless liquid, CAS No. is 108-65-6, chemical formula is CH₁₂O, melting point is −67°C , with a boiling point of 146°C, is a high-grade solvent. It has both non-polar and polar parts in the same molecule, so it has a certain ability to dissolve both non-polar and polar substances.

Pgme (propylene glycol methyl ether) or 1-methoxy-2-propanol, colorless liquid, CAS No. is 107-98-2, chemical formula is CHO, melting point is −97 °C, boiling point is 120°C, Pgme has a faint ether smell, but no strong pungent smell , making it more widely used and safer. Pgme contains two chemical functional groups with strong solubility - hydroxyl and ether bonds, so it has good solubility for polar or non-polar substances and is often called a "universal" solvent. At the same time, PGME is an environmentally friendly solvent with low toxicity, no strong irritating odor, and moderate volatility.

Pgmea vs. pgme: industrial application

As a low-toxic advanced industrial solvent, pgmea is currently widely used in the fields of electronic chemicals, LCD screens, and process solvents including inks, coatings, textile dyes, and paints. In the semiconductor industry, PGMEA is a commonly used solvent, mainly used for the application of surface adhesives such as Bis(trimethylsilyl)amine (HMDS) on silicon wafers. This compound is often the most abundant airborne molecular contaminant (AMC) in semiconductor clean rooms due to its evaporation into the surrounding air.

Pgme has been widely used because of its excellent solubility, suitable volatilization rate and reactivity. Similar to other glycol ethers, it is used as a carrier or solvent in printing, inks, paints, and coatings. For example, it is mainly used as an excellent solvent for nitrocellulose, alkyd resin and maleic anhydride-modified phenolic resin; water-based coatings made from it are widely used in the automobile industry. It is also used as an industrial and commercial paint stripper; as an antifreeze in diesel engines; and as an intermediate for the herbicide metolachlor. It can be used as a cleaning agent and diluent for semiconductors. Combined with pgmeapgme can act as a cleaner for edge bead removal (EBR) and resin reduction coating (RRC) processes used in the semiconductor industry.

Pgmea vs. pgme: Chinese market development

The production capacity of China's pgmea industry has expanded rapidly and now exceeds 400,000 tons. It has become the world's largest producer, accounting for more than 35% of global production. Production capacity is mainly concentrated in East China, South China and other regions, with East China accounting for the highest proportion of production capacity. Pgmea can be divided into electronic grade and industrial grade.

At present, industrial grade products are relatively mature, and electronic grade products still have great development opportunities. Electronic grade pgmea has higher purity, but most of the products currently on the market have purity lower than 99%. Electronic grade pgmea can be used in photoresist, and its content in photoresist is more than 80%. The current localization rate of domestic photoresists is low. In the future, as the domestic substitution of China's LCD photoresists and semiconductor photoresists increases, the demand for pgmea will continue to rise.

Pgme can be applied in a wide range of fields, of which the coating field accounts for 40%-45%. In recent years, China's coatings industry has been developing towards water-based, light-curing, high solid content, low toxicity and green raw materials. As an environmentally friendly solvent, pgme is in line with the development direction of the coatings industry and its demand is increasing. At the same time, in the electronics field, with the development of the electronics industry, the demand for electronic-grade pgme with high purity and low metal ion content is also increasing.
