Breakthrough in Chinese Innovation: Domestic Novel Drug Secures Top Spot

ECHEMI 2024-04-22

In a remarkable achievement, a domestic Chinese innovative drug has emerged victorious, capturing the top position in the market. With a sales volume of approximately 1.78 billion yuan, this groundbreaking drug has surpassed its competitors, signaling a significant milestone for the pharmaceutical industry.

In a recent announcement, it was revealed that a renowned biotech company, SinoCell Tech, has achieved two remarkable successes. Firstly, in their 2024 Q1 performance forecast, they anticipate a revenue increase of 82.12% to 88.21%, amounting to 600 million to 620 million yuan. This positive trajectory signifies a notable shift from losses to profitability for the company. Secondly, their flagship product, a recombinant factor VIII drug named Anjiayin, has emerged as the market leader with sales of over 1.78 billion yuan, boasting a growth rate exceeding 77%.

Securing the top position in the market was no easy feat for Anjiayin, as it faced stiff competition from imported recombinant factor VIII drugs. Prior to its approval, there were already five imported drugs available in China, including Baye's Bokochi and Keyuqi, Bayer's Baiyinzhi, Pfizer's Renjie, and Novo Nordisk's Nuoyi. Moreover, shortly after Anjiayin's approval, another imported product, Green Cross from South Korea, made its entry into the market. According to data from Yaozh, in 2020, the domestic sales of recombinant factor VIII drugs reached 1.168 billion yuan. However, the market was predominantly controlled by Bayer, Baxter, and Pfizer, with market shares of 53.68%, 27.65%, and 14.73% respectively.

Anjiayin, the first domestically produced recombinant factor VIII drug approved for sale, made its debut in July 2021. It received approval from the National Medical Products Administration for the treatment of bleeding control and prevention in adults and adolescents (≥12 years) with hemophilia A. Despite fierce competition from imported drugs, Anjiayin quickly gained popularity and achieved a sales revenue of 1.023 billion yuan in its first full year on the market. According to SinoCell Tech's 2023 annual report, sales of Anjiayin continued to surge, reaching approximately 1.78 billion yuan, representing a remarkable year-on-year growth rate of over 77%. It has now firmly established itself as the market leader in its category, and there are high expectations that its revenue will surpass the 2 billion yuan mark in 2024.

Taking its success to the international market, SinoCell Tech had initially planned clinical research on Anjiayin for both adult and pediatric preventive treatments. However, due to insufficient funds from their 2020 IPO, the company was unable to execute its plans. Nevertheless, in 2021, they successfully raised capital through stock issuances to specific parties with the approval of the China Securities Regulatory Commission. SinoCell Tech has already signed agreements with partners in India, Turkey, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Pakistan. These collaborations leverage the partners' local clinical research, registration, and sales experience to facilitate the commercialization of Anjiayin in these respective markets. In 2023, SinoCell Tech submitted registration applications for Anjiayin in Pakistan, Brazil, Indonesia, and India.

SinoCell Tech's success story goes beyond Anjiayin. With the approval and introduction of three additional products, Anpingxi, Anjiarun, and Anbeizhu, in 2023, the company has shifted from a single-product revenue structure to a diverse product portfolio. According to their 2023 annual report, excluding revenue from the COVID-19 vaccine, SinoCell Tech achieved a total revenue of 1.883 billion yuan, with Anjiayin and the other three products accounting for 94.51% and 5.49% of the total revenue, respectively.

SinoCell Tech's groundbreaking achievement with Anjiayin, a domestic innovative drug, has propelled the company to the forefront of the pharmaceutical industry. With its remarkable sales performance and plans for international expansion, SinoCell Tech is poised for further success, contributing to the growth and advancement of the Chinese pharmaceutical sector. The triumph of Anjiayin not only showcases the potential of domestic drug development but also underscores China's commitment to fostering innovation and achieving self-sufficiency in the pharmaceutical field.
