Seizing Opportunities in the Thriving Multi-Billion Dollar Inhalation Formulations Market

ECHEMI 2024-04-22

Inhalation formulations have emerged as a frontline therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, driving significant growth in the global market. With a compound annual growth rate of 2.68% between 2018 and 2023, the global sales of inhalation formulations are projected to reach nearly 350 billion RMB by 2023. China, in particular, has witnessed rapid growth in this sector, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.62% during the same period, surpassing 15 billion RMB in sales.

Unveiling a Lucrative Blue Ocean Market:

Inhalation formulations offer distinct advantages over conventional oral and injectable formulations. By directly delivering medication to the lungs, these formulations provide rapid onset of action, bypassing first-pass metabolism and reducing the required dosage. Moreover, inhalation therapy improves patient compliance compared to injectable formulations and reduces the incidence of adverse effects. As a result, inhalation therapy is recommended as a first-line treatment by global initiatives such as the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) and the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), as well as national guidelines in China.

Inhalation Formulations and Market Segmentation:

Inhalation formulations comprise a combination of pharmaceuticals and nebulizing devices. They can be classified based on the dosage form/device type, such as inhalation powders, inhalation aerosols, nebulized liquid formulations, and soft mist formulations. They can also be categorized based on their pharmacological mechanism of action, including bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and combination formulations. The global inhalation formulations market is dominated by dry powder inhalers (47% market share), followed by inhalation aerosols and nebulized liquid formulations. In China, nebulized liquid formulations hold the majority market share (60%-70%), while dry powder inhalers account for approximately 30% of the market.

Competitive Landscape and Therapeutic Applications:

In terms of market share by therapeutic application, respiratory drugs hold a significant portion of the global inhalation formulations market, with anti-asthma and COPD medications accounting for nearly 95%. Other indications include anti-infective drugs (respiratory tract), pulmonary arterial hypertension treatments, diagnostic tests, and influencing medications. In China, respiratory drugs dominate the inhalation formulations market, with anti-asthma/COPD medications and cough/cold medications collectively holding over 90% of the market share, and pulmonary surfactants accounting for 6%-7%.

Active Ingredient Analysis:

When analyzing sales based on active ingredients, budesonide/formoterol stands out as the leading compound worldwide, while fluticasone/salmeterol exhibits rapid growth potential. However, fluticasone/salmeterol has experienced a decline in sales. In China, budesonide has maintained its top position, although its sales have declined significantly, while N-acetylcysteine as a nebulized expectorant has seen substantial growth in recent years. Combination formulations have demonstrated superior symptom improvement in COPD and asthma indications, and the future market for combination inhalation formulations is expected to expand gradually, although China currently relies primarily on monotherapy.

The inhalation formulations market presents a lucrative blue ocean opportunity, driven by the rising prevalence of respiratory diseases and the advantages offered by this mode of drug delivery. Chinese pharmaceutical companies are actively venturing into this market, capitalizing on the rapid growth and immense potential it offers. As the market continues to expand, companies that develop innovative inhalation formulations and leverage the potential of combination therapies are well-positioned to thrive in this multi-billion dollar industry.
