Vietnam's Barramundi Exports to the UAE Witness a Remarkable 62% YoY Growth in March

ECHEMI 2024-05-06

Vietnam, known for its thriving seafood industry, has experienced a significant surge in its barramundi exports to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In the month of March, the country witnessed a remarkable 62% year-on-year growth in barramundi exports to the UAE. This surge in trade highlights Vietnam's increasing prominence as a key supplier of frozen fish products to the UAE market.

According to a report from SeafoodMedia on April 25, Vietnam exported barramundi worth $2 million to the UAE in March, reflecting a substantial 62% increase compared to the same period last year. The cumulative export value for the first quarter has exceeded $7 million, demonstrating the sustained growth in barramundi trade between the two nations.

The primary export category from Vietnam to the UAE is HS0304 frozen fish fillets, which witnessed an impressive 81% month-on-month growth in export value in March. This surge in exports is particularly noteworthy as Vietnam had not exported barramundi to the UAE in March for the past two years. However, in March of this year, Vietnam successfully exported both frozen and processed barramundi products, with export values of $79,000 and $75,000, respectively.

The UAE is a significant net importer of seafood, with approximately 90% of its food consumption being reliant on imports. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the annual seafood consumption in the UAE surpasses 220,000 tons, with a per capita consumption of 28.6 kilograms, which is higher than the global average.

This surge in barramundi exports from Vietnam to the UAE not only signifies the growing demand for high-quality seafood in the UAE market but also highlights the competitiveness and capability of Vietnam's seafood industry. The consistent increase in exports demonstrates the confidence and trust that the UAE market has placed in Vietnamese barramundi products.

Vietnam's barramundi exports to the UAE have experienced a remarkable 62% year-on-year growth in March, signaling a significant expansion in trade between the two countries. The UAE's reliance on imports for its seafood consumption presents a lucrative opportunity for Vietnam's seafood industry to further establish its presence in the UAE market. As the demand for high-quality seafood continues to rise, Vietnam's role as a key supplier of barramundi to the UAE is expected to strengthen, fostering mutually beneficial trade relations between the two nations.
