Origin Materials partners with IMDvista to develop world's first PET caps and closures

ECHEMI 2024-05-08

Origin Materials, the world's leading carbon anode materials company, and IMDvista (IMD), a Swiss high-tech company specializing in visual inspection of bottle caps and other packaging components, announced a strategic partnership to produce the world's first PET cap and closure manufacturing system.

"Best-in-class manufacturing partners like IMD are providing subsystems for our production lines. Together we are doing something that has never been done before: we are building the world’s first commercial-scale PET cap and closure manufacturing system." said John Bissell, co-CEO and co-founder of Origin.

"Our high-throughput systems will allow us to bring the recycling, sustainability and performance benefits of PET cap and closure solutions to the world. We plan to bring many of these lines online, not just to make beverage packaging better and fully recyclable, but to make almost all types of containers recyclable."

Bissell added: "IMD has been a great partner for Origin as we built the first production line. They are a global leader in high-speed test systems, headquartered in Switzerland with offices around the world, including the United States, Germany and China, and systems in use on every continent. Their advanced camera systems inspect thousands of caps per minute, allowing us to inspect billions of caps each year. We are delighted to be working with IMD and grateful for their contribution as we launch our first PET cap and closure manufacturing system."

"Ultimately, PET caps were the right solution," said IMD Chief Sales Officer (CSO) Martin Gerber, who immediately saw the revolutionary potential of Origin PET caps and closures. Martin had the opportunity to visit Origin's manufacturing development system in Germany, which left a deep impression on him.

Gerber said that over the years, IMD has explored many ways to manufacture PET caps with customers and partners. But even for IMD's longtime CSO, who has 20 years of experience, running a production line to produce caps that meet market requirements was new. Gerber added:"IMD is investing heavily in supporting the inspection and processing of PET caps, and we know this investment will pay off quickly."
