Surging Prices: April Witnesses a Synchronized Spike in Seaweed and Seasoned Nori in South Korea

ECHEMI 2024-05-08

In a recent report released by the Korean Statistical Office on May 7, it was revealed that the prices of seaweed and seasoned nori experienced a simultaneous and significant surge in the month of April. This surge is expected to have a direct impact on the prices of popular dishes like seaweed rice rolls.

South Korea's Statistical Office has unveiled data indicating a simultaneous surge in prices for seaweed and seasoned nori during the month of April. Specifically, the price of seaweed saw a remarkable increase of 10%, reaching 3.4 times the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 2.9%. This rise marks the highest increase since February of the previous year, when it soared by 11.8%.

Similarly, the price of seasoned nori rose by 6.1%, registering a new high since March of the previous year at 6.3%. The primary reason behind these price hikes can be attributed to the surge in raw material costs for seaweed processing.

As a result of the rise in seaweed prices, numerous food companies have begun adjusting the prices of their seasoned nori products, leading to an inevitable increase in the prices of popular dishes like seaweed rice rolls. Although the increase in prices for seaweed rice rolls in April remained at a steady 5.3% compared to the previous month, individual restaurants have already started raising their prices.

In response to this situation, the government has decided to waive import tariffs for dried seaweed and seasoned nori within the allocated quota for this month.
